  • Apple TV hit stores this week. With a couple of competitors on the horizon like Netgear and Xbox… will Apple TV kill the DVD star? But don’t change that dial just yet… Apple TV only works with widescreen HDTVs… did someone at Apple forget that videos on iTunes are not in HD?
  • Last week a Google executive started a rumor that Google was going to get into the mobile phone business with a cell phone in its R&D pipeline. The model was described as a low cost device connecting to the web with all of Google’s toys at your finger tips… plus, you might also be able to make a couple of phone calls with it. This week another Google executive clarified that this was not the case. They aren’t into the device business, they are in the search business. So no device, but more software for the device…Hmm, touché Google touché.
  • And speaking of searching. Just when you thought Google was omnipresent and Yahoo yielded itself completely behind the curve… This week Yahoo launched a new search system tool for mobile phones. No more will you have to search through a bunch of useless links while trying to find your local restaurant or movie time. Now what Google? Where’s your new software when Yahoo launches before you?
  • In 2005, Ebay bought Skype for $2.6 billion… and then… nothing. This week it looks like Paypal and Skype will team up to allow Skype users the capability to transfer money over their paypal accounts. Another example of the endless possibilities with Skype. But seriously, how will the IRS feel about this?
  • A new joint venture between News Corp (Faux, Myspace), and NBC yields a rival to YouTube to be launched sometime this summer. This new service will not only allow free viewing of shows such as The Simpsons, House, 24, and My Name is Earl, but also movies signed onto Fox and Universal. Advertising will pay for all of this (Cadbury Schweppes, General Motors and Intel have all signed thus far) and distribution deals with Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and MySpace will make it a serious contender. Since CorpTube doesn’t have that special something, a name for this service hasn’t been chosen yet… Anyone have any ideas for it? Drop a comment and let us know.
  • With the aftermath of President Bush’s recent trip to South America in the wake, we must ask, Energy: Donde Esta? A new report from Red Herring discuss the affects of the Brazilian sugar cane deal on the innovation of alternate fuels and the environment. One quote: “All of this is going to grow at a massive scale. I say the more sugar the better, and I would rather buy sugar from Brazil than petroleum from the Middle East.” Just remember alternative fuel… not alternative model. Where is Mr. Fusion when you need him?
