To anyone who may be a bit skeptical of all the statements made by the 15 British military captives, a new turn may now shed light on their integrity and the possibility of government coercion.

The sailors, who spent 13 days in captivity in Iran, are now cashing in on their ordeal by selling their stories to the highest media bidders. The former captives are set to earn £250,000 between them. The female crew member, Faye Turney, is said to have received £150,000 in a joint contract with a newspaper and ITV. One of the ex-hostages reportedly wanted £70,000 for his story. How convenient that the Ministry of Defense has decided to lift the ban on military personnel selling their stories while in service. The MoD claims it’s because of the “exceptional circumstances” involved.

Rose Gentle, whose son was killed in Iraq, said; “This is wrong and I don’t think it should be allowed by the MoD. None of the parents who have lost loved ones in Iraq have sold their stories.” Reports have also circulated that the sailors were planning to sell the vases, given to them in their “goody bags” by the Iranians, on eBay.

I wonder if they’d also be willing to embellish their stories further under the guise of artistic license, or mention that the greatest injustice during their interrogation was not being blindfolded or bound, but being without an ice cold refreshing Pepsi. The more I witness the media circus surrounding this event, the more flashbacks I have of Private Jessica Lynch whose story was similarly fabricated and packaged by the US government to create a hero.
