Luis Posada Carriles is a prominent anti-communist who faces terrorism charges in Venezuela and Cuba for bombing a Cuban airliner. The 1976 bombing killed 73 people. Posada is a Venezuelan national, a Cuban exile, and a former CIA employee. Hard to believe that any CIA agent would ever commit an atrocity in Latin America right?

Posada was detained in the US in 2005 after entering the country illegally. A Texas judge ruled that he should be free pending an immigration hearing in May, where he stands accused of lying to immigration officials. The judge also ordered his release on $350,000 bail, and for Posada to be under electronic monitoring in his Miami home.

The United States Government has appealed against the ruling to release Posada. US authorities don’t want to let him go free, saying he’s a security risk, but refuse to return him to either Venezuela or Cuba which want to put him on trial for his crimes. Posada was also jailed in Panama for his involvement in a plan to assassinate President Fidel Castro in 2000.

Over the span of four decades, Cuba has reported to the United Nations that anti-communist groups in America have caused the deaths of 3,478 Cubans. Groups such as Brothers to the Rescue are considered terrorist groups by Cuba and have conducted acts of terror against Cuban citizens with impunity.

This is yet another example of the hypocrisy and double standard with which our government operates. We claim to be fighting terror while simultaneously harboring a man like Posada, who has confessed to participating in terrorist acts against Cuba. Instead of trying him for terrorism, or sending him to a country which will, we look the other way because of who his victims are.

On September 20, 2001, President Bush said; “From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.” By Bush’s own definition, his administration is a hostile regime.

  1. Amazing that we would protect this loon. No wait, the vocal Cuban-Americans are equally crazed when it comes to Castro. Take down an airplane; no problemo, so long as it screws over Castro.

Its FDR’s old line taken literally: He may be a SOB, but he’s our SOB.

So much for being the city on the hill…

  2. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. It just sucks that it’s always the civilians who get screwed.
