download fileTry saying the title of this post ten times fast. I haven’t blogged about the whole Imus thing because it’s more of an emotional debate than an actual news item. Still, I guess I’m required to do at least one post on it, so here’s this one.

Imus deserves to be punished, though a more severe punishment will not equal a more positive resolution. Imus is probably not a racist or a sexist, yet he did say something racist and sexist because he thought it was socially acceptable. Why would he think that? Because in our society it is. He thought he was being cool by using a phrase taken out of black youth culture. It is unacceptable that Imus said this, but I’m not one to feign outrage or offer superficial band-aid solutions to the bigger social problem this gaffe is really about. Apparently, neither is the cast of The Daily Show. Kudos to them.
