- Here’s a story which ought to put the Virginia Tech shooting in perspective. 5 or more explosions across Baghdad have killed at least 190 people and wounded many more. Violence is climbing back toward levels seen before the US campaign to pacify Baghdad, and numerous women and children are among the dead and injured. This toll is nearly 6 times that of the Virginia Tech shooting. Sadly, this tragedy won’t get a fraction of the airtime that story got in our television media.
- Speaking of televised news coverage, the events in Iraq this year were only deemed important to newspapers and blogs. On network TV, cable TV, and Radio, Don Imus was talked about more than twice as much as the events in Iraq. Factoring in all forms of media, only Bush’s “troop surge” speech got more coverage, but 2007 is still young. The January “surge” story had a head start on the April Imus story. I’m sure the “nappy headed ho” comment will overtake the president’s call for escalation of the war before the year is through.
- A study published by WHO, UNAids, and Unicef revealed that only 28% of indigent HIV positive people have access to life saving drugs. Only 11% of pregnant women with HIV are given drugs to prevent mother to child transmission, and while Front-line drug prices have been lowered, second-line drugs still remain unaffordable.
- And now for some good news. The four evil companies which dominate the recording industry have been hit pretty hard by the continuing drop of compact disc sales, which fell 13 percent through 2006.
- President Bush says the government of Sudan must act to stop violent militias from committing atrocities in Darfur or face tougher economic sanctions. Due to 4 years of inaction, more than 200,000 people have been killed with a further 2.5 million displaced. “The world needs to act,” Bush said. “If President al-Bashir does not meet his obligations, the United States of America will act.” The world knows how good we are at stopping murderous militias. I’m sure the Janjaweed are shaking in their boots.

Man, that’s all around depressing - but important.
Is anyone surprised Imus gets more news than Iraq? Sadly, no.
Almost 200 dead in Iraq today. On Saturday, it was nearly 300. Fucking insanity.
