Not long after accusing Iran of supplying munitions and training to Iraqi insurgents, the Department of Defense has announced that they’ve seized Iranian weaponry and explosives in Afghanistan.

At a news conference, US Marine General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said markings on a plastic explosive indicated an Iranian manufacture. “We have intercepted weapons in Afghanistan headed for the Taliban that were made in Iran,” Pace said.

The general suggested that Iranian armed forces were behind the weaponry movement, but could not offer any evidence that the Iranian government was aware. “Either the leadership of the country knows what their armed forces are doing or they don’t know. And in either case that’s a problem.”

Pace gave few other details about the seizure but another military official later said it was conducted in the last week or so in the southern city of Kandahar, the Times said.

U.S. commanders in Iraq have claimed in recent months that Iran is supplying munitions and training to Iraqi insurgents. Tehran denies any such involvement.

If you’re like me, right about now you should be throwing your hands up and shouting “so what?” Much like the story about Iranian weapons being found in Iraq, the manner in which this story is being presented as a major revelation is more shocking to me than the news itself. What our troops really fear are the US-provided weapons that the Taliban have, not the Iranian weaponry they may have acquired. In fact, the Iranian government has been enemies with the Taliban long before we ever were. You might say they hated the Taliban even before it was cool. The Iranians helped form the new government after our invasion, and now we’re stabbing them in the back with false claims like we did to Saddam. The Defense Department is purposely misleading the American people into thinking this story means something it doesn’t, and for obvious reasons.
