Maher and his panel dispel the myth that the recent ban of partial-birth abortions is the first step in overturning Roe vs. Wade, which is nothing more than alarmism by the left and a false-victory for the right. John O’Sullivan points out that the Supreme Court actually did what it was supposed to do, and that ruling against the bill would be an abuse of power since it was passed by both chambers of Congress with a provision allowing the procedure to be performed if the mother’s life is in jeopardy. Amy Holmes, a pro-choice conservative analyst, also backs the ban.

It should also be noted that despite her unfortunate political leanings, Holmes is incredibly hot. So kudos to her for that.

  1. First of all, let me say that I absolutely agree with the chick. I also am pro choice, but in my opinion, in most cases this proceedure is unnecessary as well as pretty horrific. Besides, by 24 weeks, you as a woman should have made a fuckin decision! That coupled with the fact that with our current medical science and technology, a premature baby born at 6 months has up to a 70% chance of survival, 80% at 7months, and 90% at 8 months! So she’s absolutely right, that after 24 weeks, that fetus is actually capable of existing outside the womb.

That being said, I do believe that for extreme cases, such as when the mother’s life or health is in danger, (health in this case meaning things like organ, tissue, or skeletal damage of a crippling, but non lethal, kind) there should be no legal limit on any proceedure. And in the current ban, there is no such addendum. And in my opinion, there should be.

Lastly, however, I also agree with the Brit. Creating laws is the job of the Congress. The Supreme Court did do their jobs in determining whether or not the law was constitutional. If proponents of the Health and Safety Addendum want it put in, they will have to go through the Congress. With a Democratic congress, they may just have the chance.

    Stop bitching and get busy!

  2. What do you mean, that “ruling against the bill would be an abuse of power since it was passed by both chambers of Congress.”? That is exactly what the Supreme Court is there for! To rule against laws that Congress passes that are unconstitutional.

  3. @Nathan
Allow me to clarify. Yes, the court exists to uphold the constitution. However, this bill is not unconstitutional, so ruling against it would be an abuse of power based on personal viewpoints rather than the guidelines of the constitution. I’m no fan of Republicans, but I’m also no fan of misinformation. Planned Parenthood and many Democrats are accusing the court of upholding the ban because of their own conservative agenda to overturn Roe v Wade. I don’t find that to be the case. Had they actually intervened against the bill, which allows for partial-birth abortion if the mother’s life is in jeopardy, then they would’ve been abusing their power.

According to the unquestionable authority of Wikipedia, the bill states that partial-birth abortion is “unnecessary to preserve the health of the mother,” yet includes a provision allowing for the procedure “to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, physical illness, or physical injury, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself.” If the ban didn’t have that provision then it would have been deemed unconstitutional by the court as it was in 2004. Perhaps that is what Nathan was referring to, yet in this new bill there’s no argument as to why it would be unconstitutional.

  5. Dividing Iraq (Sunni-Sheite-Turk) is not at all a bad idea.
However this would not solve their enveterate FEUDAL CHARACTERISTICS - blood brother against blood brother.

We know - we understand - they have feudal tendencies in their blood.
Dividing Iraq would not solve America’s present military objectives.
Only a total complete withdrawal will suffice as far as I am concerned,
Three thousand 300 American soldiers lives is certainly not worth America’s endeavor to civilise them.
Anything that is going to result due to our withdrawal “NOW” is the same thing that will happen in 2012.
We must remain aloof from this middle east caldron.
America has better things to do.

  6. Seems as though nobody gives a dam about the constitution and it’s amendments.
Observe; how time after time the constitution has and/is being violated. (imigration, discrimination, Iraq, the Federal Reserve Board) etc.

Let’s not be naive Congress is not doing its job.
Has not removed the “numbskull” president - though there is a constitutional stipulation that; Whenever a president has proven to be incapable of the presidency - Congress can replace him with an appointed representative.
The Federal Reserve Board can be purchased and abolished for $120 million dollars - that would be about $2.00 per US citizen.
