Jon Stewart gave Mr. Straight Talk a severe beatdown last night. It’s good to see the nation’s comedians holding a presidential candidate’s feet to the fire, and picking up the slack where the mainstream media has failed. McCain’s argument for his support of the war seems to be that because certain troops want to believe the lie that they’re fighting for a noble cause, then we ought to stay the course until they mutiny. He doesn’t actually state that they are fighting for a noble cause. Stewart’s in top form during the entire interview, while McCain’s only defense is to filibuster against the damning onslaught of reality his host provides him with. Enjoy.
Part 1 of 4
At the end of the second segment McCain unleashes this partisan diversion against Stewart’s audience, but Jon doesn’t let slide:
McCain: “I think I know whose side they’re on”
Stewart: “They’re on America’s side because they’re patriots”
The other three parts of this interview are available below the fold.

I think its interesting that John McCain is the first guest I’ve seen who seems to hold his own against Stewart’s satire - This seems like a real conversation, rather than a lampoon. Of course, what McCain is saying is pretty horrible, from start to finish (putting an IED under Stewart’s desk? If the US lost, who won? Seems to me like everybody’s lost). I just think its interesting that McCain could have this kind of presence on the show. Maybe because he’s been on before?

There’s one thing I agree with McCain about, and that is the fact that we are where we are. I honestly don’t know what the solution to Iraq should be. What I do know is that the mess in Iraq is, to a huge degree, because of our Insurgency. I don’t believe any country should be allowed to destablize an entire region and then just leave. But in the face of Civil War, what other choice is there?
After hearing him speak, some of the credit I once gave McCain is restored. He definitely understands war and has good intentions. However, even the best intentions can mean nothing in the face of the action one takes. And the actions this country has taken over the last 4 years pretty much eclipses any good intention anyone may ever have had.
I’m sorry John McCain. In the past, you may have had my vote, but not this time.
Perhaps there is still hope for Iraq. Perhaps one day, when we are there truly for the cause of democracy, when our addiction to oil is no longer a driving factor, when we lead by example rather than rhetoric, we can take a positive role in the shaping of the “New Democratic Iraq.” Sadly, while I pray for that day to come, that day is not now.

McCain’s words are those of a campaign strategist. Check out these old videos from the 90s:

Oh - and since I’m new, and I’m not sure if I have this posted somewhere I can find it later, so just in case it’s true (a book will be written in 5-10 years that will let me know)…Lieberman cut a deal with McCain prior to the 2006 midterm elections that guaranteed him a spot on the GOP ticket as VP if he backed McCain on Iraq the whole way. My gut told me this a while back, and with every passing day it seems more and more true.
So with the campaign strategist speaking for both of them…eh, not exactly “Profiles in Courage” material.

He has been a true hero of the PAST and for that we honor him. However, he should reign in his ego and realize his age and his political agenda is old and tired. If he had all the right answers we would know it by now. The next 8 years because of Republicans like him are going to be very taxing on the new President and he’s no longer up to the task. With this said, he’s still more the man than Rudy who ran a city in which prior to 911 half of it’s population couldn’t stand him.

“We are where we are” is a pathetic denial of a reality that affects the ability of this country to act with the maturity that comes with the territory.
Looking at the Iraq tragedy from a “win/loose” viewpoint is a consequence of this country’s pathological aversion to apologizing or admitting mistakes.
To get out of a hole smart societies avoid digging deeper.

Did anyone bother watching McCain’s campaign ad? The end echoes with the words, “We are Americans! We will not surrender!”
Bizarrely enough, is McCain saying that “we” Americans are on another country’s soil telling them to surrender to us?
I can understand not surrendering our own country, if it ever came to being invaded or a war with our immediate neighbors, but how can America surrender inside a nation, thousands of miles away, that isn’t ours to surrender? That’s called a takeover.
McCain and Bushco aren’t leaving Iraq until the Iraq oil revenues are signed over to US interests… and then they’re not leaving. This occupation should be privatized; let the oil companies pay for their own security force.
Instead, Americans have to pay for the oil companies’ war, their overpriced gas, and a ruined international reputation, while our troops pay with their lives, whether or not they are killed in battle.

I don’t think that there is a single person who believes war is a good thing, I also don’t believe that anyone fighting a war is 100% comitted to the potential casualties. Dems are ranting the war for oil, high gas prices. Did anyone mention that there is a country growing at an enormous rate with 1 billion people, who just happens to be hosting the Olympics. The US is 1/3 the size, and while we consume more then most other contries, doesn’t it stand to reason a country like China is probably gaining in it’s own consumption? People say addiction to oil like they have some solution? The economy is run by pricing efficiencies, for example did anyone know that you can produce man-made-oil without having to pump a single drop out of the ground. Creating a hydro-carbon man-made fuel is possible at a high cost (approx 4.00 a galon). I’d like to see more green ways of powering cars, but I don’t think the current technology is there yet, and if something sounds too good to be true it probably is. Auto manufacturers don’t necessarly have small R&D budgets, Toyota did not develop hybrid technology, they were the first to take a large gamble that oil prices might offset the potential savings. Even plug in vehicles pose problems, how about having to change out 10-15k in batteries every 2-4 years? Anyone think about that? Lastly, I think as Americans, for once (in a long time) we should start being leaders, not followers. We need to work together and stop playing political teams. Stop focusing on problems, any idiot can do that. What we need are solutions and progress.
