You’ll be cursing the fabric of space/time that this interview isn’t longer. Famed intellectual and alleged anti-American commie Noam Chomsky on al-Jazeera. You can’t get much better than that.

What is meant by “in the 1980’s the US was fighting a war against the Catholic Church and the proliferation of liberal religion”? Thanks

Nice post. I wonder if anyone in the Bush administration will finally realize that they’ve made a deal with the devil…oh yeah, that’s how they got into the administration.

@mike
Well, Catholicism is fairly liberal to begin with (at least more so than the current Democratic Party). Noam said the US was at war “against the Catholic church, which was sponsoring ‘liberation theology’” in Latin America. Liberation theology was a more active interpretation of Catholicism aimed to bring about political change for the betterment of the people. In a sense, the US was fighting the Catholic church in Latin America, often executing priests and nuns who were leaders in their communities and opposed to US imperialism. I wrote a post about the death of Archbishop Romero last month, who was probably the most famous of these victims. Read it here. It’ll give you a good idea of what “liberation theology” is all about, and why it arose.

@reese: Let’s not forget that the administration is not run by devil worshipers, but by Born Again Christians!
