The Daily Show covers the first Republican debate, which was meant to introduce the candidates to “the 28 percent of Americans who think the last six years have been… Otay!” America was shown a wide selection of old, rich white men whose hard-on for Ronald Reagan was represented best by the phallic replica of Air Force One hovering over the audience.

Stewart then goes on to examine the contradictory mix of seemingly pro-life principles with Wild West machismo which Republican candidates are expected to display. The best example of this is John McCain’s cheery smile after he describes how he would personally hunt down and murder Osama bin Laden for the sake of revenge.

  1. I liked the point Stewart made - that the right seems to be looking for a ’sado-optimist’…And while the clips are funny, I confess I’m not a little bit scared that those are people who have a chance to win the white house..

  2. I love the “Gates of Hell” /Philly analogy. W.C. Fields & his “I’d rather be in Philadelphia” on his tombstone would agree. Yet, better to be at the Gates of Hell in Philly than the Bush White House in D.C.
