At a closed-door meeting for Jewish Republicans, US Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams assured the group that current efforts to further the Israeli-Palestinian peace process were being done simply for show. Abrams described the diplomatic activity as “process for the sake of process,” done to “assuage the Arabs and the Europeans, who haven’t been happy with the United States [and are] happy to see that there’s at least an attempt or energy being put into the peace process.”
One might be surprised to find that the Bush administration doesn’t actually care about establishing peace in a region of the world our military is currently fighting in. Then again, one might be a complete moron for assuming that peace has ever been a primary goal of the administration. Controlled by AIPAC and Christian Fundamentalists, the administration has publicly and shamelessly assisted the Israeli government in their effort to imprison and eradicate the Palestinians from their own land. Ever since Hamas was democratically elected, US and Israeli policy towards Palestine has succeeded in further dividing the Palestinians into warring factions.
In response to a question raised at the event about whether “European and Arab pressure could put Israel in a corner,” the National Security Council issued a statement saying that “ultimately, the United States provides an emergency brake.”
Abrams also told the meeting that he would guard against the bureaucrats at the State Department taking over American Middle East policy, as well as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice falling into the “Clintonian mode” of needing to point to achievements to secure her legacy as her term concludes, according to someone at the discussion.
As is the fundamentalist mindset, working to secure peace between Jews and Arabs is a truly horrible thing which can only work against a political figure. Condoleezza has traveled throughout the Middle East, brokering meetings between Israeli PM Olmert and Palestinian President Abbas. However, her trips have failed to make any real headway, proving to be nothing more than photo-ops.
The Jewish Republicans were delighted to hear that Zionist occupation, apartheid, and genocide would continue to be approved and funded by the US after they were assured that peace efforts were only a façade to cover the real strategy of dominating the region. The National Security Council acted quickly to cover up Abrams’ admittance, along with any suggestion that there is tension between him and Condi.
“Advancing toward peace between Israelis and Palestinians and toward the president’s vision of two states living side by side in peace and security is not only Secretary Rice’s goal, it is a key goal of the President’s,” an NSC statement said. “It is inaccurate to suggest that the White House and State Department are at odds on this issue, for the entire administration - including Mr. Abrams - is committed to pursuing it and the rest of the President’s agenda.”
Despite what the NSC says, actions speak louder than words. The Middle East peace talks have been abandoned for six years. Oh, and just in case you’re unaware, Abrams is another one of Bush’s crooked appointees (is there any other kind?). He pleaded guilty in 1991 to two misdemeanor counts of withholding information from Congress during the Iran-Contra Affair investigation, and also had a hand in the 2002 Venezuelan coup attempt on President Hugo Chavez.
