Recent findings presented at the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) annual meeting have shown that the population of blue whales has increased from a few hundred to a few thousand in the Southern Hemisphere.

The blue whale is thought to be the largest animal on Earth, growing up to nearly 100 feet (30m) in length and weighing up to 190 tons.

The Blue Whale population has been growing by about 7-8% per year for over 10 years. There are about 2,300 Blue Whales in the Southern Hemisphere. While figures are not available for the Northern Hemisphere, the population there is thought to be growing as well. Before industrial whaling began about a century ago, the population was thought to be between 150,000-200,000.

Blue whale protection started in the 1960’s, and the species survival was doubted due to its small population. The population of other large species, including fin whales and humpbacks, are growing as well, but more needs to be done to protect them from hunting and the negative effects of climate change.

  7. I do not appreciate hunters hunting Blue Whales. this is the largest animal left and greedy people are destroying them. this has to come to a stop.

  8. That’s good. The whales are coming back, and the industrial world has not crumbled to dust because of it. It’s amazing how repeatedly wrong those f’ers can be, and still keep their jobs.

In this day and age, there really is NO VALID REASON to commercially hunt whales of any kind.
