Around 13,000 police were on hand, and authorities said about 30,000 protesters had come for the daylong demonstration under the motto “another world is possible”. Riot police had been deployed in advance and officers videotaped the demonstration…
“The world shaped by the dominance of the G8 is a world of war, hunger, social divisions, environmental destruction and barriers against migrants and refugees,” organizers said in leaflets handed out on the streets. “We want to protest against this and show the alternatives.”
A 12km security fence has been built around the resort where for the June 6-8 talks about climate change, aid and financial markets.
The summit will be held in the German city of Heiligendamn. Many human rights and charity groups have been taking part in these demonstrations. The Iraq war seems to have been the catalyst which has fueled global resistance towards the world’s leading corporate powers. Germans are expected to block roads leading to the summit and blockade the military airport which delegates will be arriving at. Containing protests has been Germany’s largest security operation since World War II. Follow that analogy further if you’d like.

The demonstration was split into two groups. One starting at the railway station and one starting starting in the city (The second one were mostly people living the No-G8-camps) . Both were meeting at the central stage.
I was one of the people who counted the number of participants and the group starting the railway station were alone over 30,000. Even if the other group would have been significant smaller it would have been still 50,000 to 60,000.
The mainstream media was mainly showing the “Black Block”-people attacking the police. (Which is unacceptable.) What they didn’t show were the police attacking peaceful protestors on the approbated area for the final demonstration. They pushed around people (includingy myself), used pepperspray on (some) people getting nearer than one meter and the used waterthrowers on demonstrater which shouted: “We are peaceful. What are you?”
