Cullen Murphy was on the Colbert Report last week to discuss his book, Are We Rome? The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America. Murphy is concerned that if every government function becomes privatized that our country will be entirely up for sale (sorry Ron Paul fans). If Hillary wins the presidency we’ll also be sure to see that transition completed fairly soon.

Colbert invites the comparisons from one genocidal empire to another, even suggesting that we borrow certain other ideas - such as crucifixion. In that light, I guess pro-torture Neocons aren’t really bad Americans after all, they’re just good Romans. That would explain the pedophilia too.

  2. I don’t think we’re Rome, but I can deny the plethora of striking similarities. I think this is due simply to the fact that the US is indeed an Empire. Perhaps not in the classical, nationalistic sense, but certainly in the economic as well as the militaristic senses. Furthermore, I firmly believe that there is a majority in our government that not only sees nothing wrong with this, but actually desires the US to be the greatest Empire in history. And to these poor sods, I have only this to say:
There were many “greatest empires” throughout history. Where are they now? In ruins. Why? Because they, every single one of them, collapsed under their own weight, or were destroyed by other more powerful empires. The point is, they are dust. “Even the most powerful is not strong enough to stay powerful forever.”
And to these poor sods, I ask, Is this really something to aspire to?
    Perhaps.
In that case, Prepare for the Confederacy.

  3. I meant “can’t deny.” Fingers are slow today.

  4. Would that be the New World Order, that I heard Obama mention on Letterman, what the hell is wrong with these people, why won’t they leave the world alone. As some have said, you have to look at the results of intervention, please look at what intervention does to the people of most of the countries the US intervenes in. Please
