In the wake of the G8 Summit, where the leaders of the world’s richest counties reiterated their promise to cancel all the debt owed by third world countries, Greg Palast talks to Randi Rhodes about vulture funds siphoning aid for Africa. One such vulture fund, Donegal International, is trying to collect $40 million dollars from Zambia after buying one of its debts for $4 million. Congressman John Conyers and Donald Payne have brought up the topic with President Bush, demanding he close the legal loopholes that allow vulture funds to profit from poverty.

As the One Vote ’08 campaign is working with members of both parties to mobilize “voters to save lives and secure our future,” the link between these vulture fund operations and the Republican Party makes me wonder if there is an ulterior motive behind Senators Bill Frist and Tom Daschle getting involved with Bono’s relief work.

  1. Yeah, I heard this on the radio live earlier this week. Fucking disgusting, yet perfectly legal in a free market system. If anything, this should prove to Libertarians why Government intervention in the free market is sometimes sadly necessary!

  2. @PapaFigue
Oh great, you said the L word. Don’t encourage them, or they’ll soon be in this thread too, shouting “Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul”. They’re like Republicans with teenage angst who decided to get political in between bong hits.

    Now we sit and wait.
