Taking the advice of what little base he has left, President Bush commuted the sentence of former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby today. This move came only hours after a federal appeals panel ruled that Libby could not delay his 2 ½-year prison term in the CIA leak case.

Trying to explain why his accomplices in the lead up to war are above the law yet again, Bush said, “I respect the jury’s verdict, but I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.”

Scooter was convicted of lying to authorities and obstructing justice in March. The Decider has left a $250,000 fine and two years probation intact in what he described as “a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby.” Libby was the highest-ranking White House official to be sentenced to prison since the Iran-Contra affair (a past scandal which the current Secretary of Defense knows a thing or two about).
