A survey conducted by the American Research Group has found that 54 percent of Americans support the beginning of impeachment proceedings against Dick Cheney, while 45 percent favor impeaching George W. Bush. The White House declined to comment on the poll.

The only presidential candidate listening to the American people on this issue is Dennis Kucinich, who filed Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Cheney in April. No other Democratic Presidential candidate, not even Gravel, has expressed support for Kucinich’s bill (HR 333). The bill currently has 14 co-sponsors.

Among Democrats, support for impeachment is 76%, and at 51% among Independents. Even 17% of Republicans said they favor impeachment. However, due to lack of coverage by the mainstream media and mainstream blogs alike, very few Americans even know impeachment is actively being pursued by a presidential candidate, thus keeping support for the actual bill fairly low.

When he introduced his bill, Kucinich said, “The Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. He has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive us about the relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda. And he openly lied to the America people and has publicly threatened aggression against Iran.”

“It’s not a happy day when most Americans believe that the Vice President of the United States lied, deceived, misled the American people and violated his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution — not to mention the other actions and abuses that are beginning to attract Congressional attention,” Kucinich added. “But every elected official in this nation, especially the highest elected officials, must be held accountable for their actions; and impeachment is the Constitutional mechanism to hold the Vice President accountable and to protect our democracy.”

Impeachment can be brought by a majority vote of the House of Representatives. Conviction requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate. National polls have also shown overwhelming support for Kucinich’s other key positions, such as the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, a national health insurance plan covering all Americans, along with the repeal of NAFTA and the Patriot Act. The bad thing is that Americans holding these views don’t even know they support Kucinich.
