The Democrats have failed as representatives since they were elected into the majority over half-a-year ago. The war is allowed to rage on with their funding, and the administration continues to abuse its power with their consent. Majority leader Harry Reid made clear his misunderstanding of exactly what he was put into power to do when he said, “No one is calling for a precipitous withdrawal in Iraq. No one.” Um, how about the American people Mr. Reid? Does our opinion count, or is the opinion of your fellow warmongers all that matters?
In March of this year, a CNN poll reported that 58 percent of Americans want US troops out of Iraq by 2008, and 21 percent want an immediate pullout. While that may not be everyone, it sure as hell isn’t “no one”. I’m positive that those numbers have risen quite a bit by now (anyone have a link to a more recent poll?). What America are the Democrats working for when they can so easily ignore the one goal they were put into power to achieve? While Reid may consider leaving “tens of thousands of troops in Iraq” a proper withdrawal, the rest of us know better. One person in particular is Cindy Sheehan.
Like many of us, Sheehan has decided she’s had enough of this betrayal. Now she’s vowed to run against Nancy Pelosi as an independent in San Fransisco if the Speaker of the House does not file articles of impeachment against Bush. I personally think Sheehan stands a fighting chance, but take note of how condescending CNN is to her cause.

It’s hard to be a progressive and defend Reid/Pelosi at this point. I haven’t monitored Congress so closely, but my sense is that a lot of the Democratic leadership is doing a pretty good job — Conyers, Leahy, Waxman, etc. But Reid/Pelosi are clearly taking political caution to the extreme, and inviting a lot of valid criticism in the process.
Here are some updated polling numbers on Iraq. You’re right that the number of Americans calling for withdrawal has increased, though not dramatically (people were pretty pissed off back in March, too). The most recent polling from CBS shows that 63% think we should set a timetable for withdrawal in 2008.
