I just finished listening to Cindy Sheehan in a radio interview this afternoon, and she said something very truthful that many progressive Americans have yet to realize. “The Democrats will not hold this administration accountable, so we have to hold the Democrats accountable.” The Dems have continued this war and allowed over 600 US soldiers to die since they took control of Congress. We need to get rid of the enablers, Democrats included, and it needs to happen now. Democracy is not something that only occurs once every four years. It is now the Democratic leadership who is suppressing the will of the people.
Sheehan was taken into custody inside Rep. John Conyers’ office, where she had spent an hour imploring him to launch impeachment proceedings against Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Conyers, D-Michigan, chairs the House Judiciary Committee, where any impeachment effort would have to begin…
… Sheehan and about 200 other protesters had walked to Conyers’ office from Arlington National Cemetery. She said Conyers told her there weren’t enough votes for impeachment to move forward on the issue.
Forty-five of Sheehan’s fellow protesters also were arrested. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said that after they are processed, the arrested activists could each pay a $50 fine to be released.
Conyers told Sheehan and fellow protesters that he would not endorse Dennis Kucinich’s plan for impeachment since there wasn’t enough support for it in Congress. Now, if the majority of Americans support impeachment, shouldn’t our “representatives” also support it by a similar percentage? Sheehan then asked what possible recourse the American people have against this criminal administration if impeachment is not an option, to which Conyers told her that we can vote out the enablers in ’08. Cindy told Conyers that HE was the enabler, and went ahead with her sit in. Since the Democrats still refuse to act, it is understood that she will now run against Pelosi as an Independent, and we wish her the best of luck.
Conyers himself was amongst those previously endorsing impeachment before Pelosi shut it down. The following is from Ray McGovern a 27-year veteran analyst of the CIA and co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), who was there with Sheehan in Conyers’ office.
As we began our discussion with Conyers, it was as though he thought we were “born yesterday,” as Harry Truman would put it. With feigned enthusiasm he began, Let’s hold a Town Hall meeting in Detroit so we can talk about impeachment. Get out my schedule; let’s see, we need to hear from everyone about this.
Been there, done that, I reminded the congressman.
On May 29, 2007, Col. Ann Wright and I were among those who flew to Detroit for a highly advertised Town Hall meeting on impeachment, because we were assured that John Conyers would be there.
That Town Hall/panel discussion was arranged by the Michigan chapter of the National Lawyers Guild less than two weeks after the Detroit City Council passed a resolution, cosponsored by Conyers’ wife Monica Conyers—calling for the impeachment of Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. We had hoped that Monica’s clear vision and courage might be contagious.
I had to remind the congressman that he did not show up for the Town Hall.
