Stephen defends the practice of denying constitutional rights to the poor, arguing that different classes ought to be allotted different rights. The plan sounds comedic in the unapologetically ridiculous way Colbert’s alter-ego describes it, but in reality it’s pretty much what we’ve had in place since our country was established. And while such preferential treatment towards those with money is nothing new, it has fluctuated between generations. Currently, the gap between rich and poor is widening, despite an overall growth in our economy which Faux News can’t stop raving about. The rights of the majority are suppressed to maintain the existence of a wealthy minority. Congress Democrats, we’re looking in your direction again.
