Blakkbox Part 2 and Leaflet Warfare

Last week I posted the first three parts of Blakkbox’s documentary series on last summer’s Israel-Lebanon war. Below are three more of the short (~6 minute) docs which are now airing on Current TV.

“Laughter Amid Bombs,” is my favorite of this bunch because of its focus on the civilian victims of war and its examination of the Israeli leaflets dropped over Lebanon. The fortune cookie style of the leaflet propaganda is almost laughable, but it’s no joke. Here’s an excerpt:

Hassan [Nasrallah] is playing with fire, and Lebanon is going to burn. Hassan has mortgaged your future, and look; you are paying the price.”

Most of the time, these leaflets provided the only warning to the Lebanese that Israeli air-strikes were on the way.

I clearly can’t testify to the accuracy of the translation in “Laughter Amid Bombs,” and I wasn’t able to find any other reporting which confirmed that particular leaflet. But based on a Reuters article about the leaflets and some source documents, it seems like a reasonable translation. Notice how the themes of punishment and humiliation run throughout Israel’s communications with the Lebanese people. What if all citizens of the U.S. were punished militarily by the world community for the actions of our rogue leader? Would that be fair?

Part 4: “Laughter Amid Bombs”

Hit the jump for parts 5 and 6. I’ll post the seventh and final episode when it airs.

Part 5: “War on a Moped”

Part 6: “Chasing the Carnage”

One Response to “Blakkbox Part 2 and Leaflet Warfare”

  1. Hi, Ev. Thanks for your thoughtful response to my comment over at Blue Gal’s. I wanted to say that I loved the video, and the thoughts about the fighting were an afterthought. Sometimes I feel like I’m going overboard with my nonviolence evangelizing, but it almost seems like a necessary step because violence is so pervasive. It’s in our language (I almost said I was on a nonviolence CRUSADE, cities talk about FIGHTING violence, etc. etc.), we feed it to our kids through cartoons and then as they get older, action movies. Quakers are admonished to find “that of God in everyone” and let me tell you, it’s really hard to find anything to love in Karl Rove and his ilk, but at least I’m trying to catch myself before I say, “I hate Dick Cheney” or “George Bush is a fuckwad”. I.e. I’m trying to practice what I preach. Anyway. I’m a Kucinich fan, voted for him in the primary in ‘04 before I was seduced by fear (and Bruce Springsteen, not literally of course, darn it) and voted for Kerry in the generals. I’m not going there again. Keep up the good work.
