I have nothing much to say about Katrina that myself and others haven’t said before. The usual tirade about incompetence, abandonment, class struggle, etc, has all been done before. Instead, I thought a simple moment of reflection would be more fitting. Please, share your own thoughts in the comment section, regardless of what they might be.

  1. Look, New Orleans is, historically, a city that shouldn’t exist.
What I mean is that ever since it’s founding, it was known to be below sea level, and the only reason dry land existed at all was through unnatural altering of the landscape through levees. Call it human ingenuity, or arrogance.
The fact is that this was not the first time the city was flooded by a breach in the levees. And unless a real committment is made to ensure the city’s future, there really is no point in rebuilding.
It really becomes a question of how important New Orleans is to America. Is it really worth saving? In my opinion, one only needs to look at the history of this city. The historical value of New Orleans to the history of this country is invaluable, and worth saving.
Apparently, there’s a lot of Neo-Con clout that says otherwise. And as long as funds are held up, as long as the committment remains unmade, we will see this city continue its decay, until the next big hurricane wipes it off the face of the Earth.
