The scary part is not the idea that one of these bombs could have exploded on accident, as nuclear cores will only detonate if they’re setup to be live, but that the control over such weaponry was loose enough to allow this to occur.
The US Air Force has launched an investigation after a B-52 bomber flew across the US last week mistakenly loaded with nuclear-armed missiles.
It follows reports in the Army Times that five missiles were unaccounted for during the three-hour flight from North Dakota to Louisiana.
The air force said the cruise missiles were safe at all times.
Army Times said the missiles were to be decommissioned but were mistakenly mounted on the bomber’s wings.
The W80-1 warhead has a yield of five to 150 kilotons, the paper said…
…”At no time was there a threat to public safety. It is important to note that munitions were safe, secure and under military control at all times,” Col Thomas said.
Yeah everyone, don’t worry. The US military is in control of the situation.

The US Air Force has launched an investigation after a B-52 bomber flew across the US last week mistakenly loaded with nuclear-armed missiles.
It’s a pretty simple thing to happen. The units in the various branches of the military that handle the actual launching of nuclear weapons never know if they are carrying actual nuclear weapons or conventional warheads. Boomers, the submarines, carry both normal and nuclear weapons. The crew are never told which tubes if any actually carry the true nuclear warheads. It’s to prevent people from considering what they are actually launching prior to launch. Even the most gungho nutjob would falter at starting WWIII. I’m almost positive that they do this in the air force as well, don’t quote me or nothing, I was in the navy.

I really have no doubt that the public was in no danger from this. But the notion that this was all some kind of “whoops, my bad” fuck up is insulting. I think it more reasonable to speculate that the Air Force was running drills. How long they’ve been doing this and for what purpose who can say, but I think it’s a safe assumption that somebody within the Air Force simply leaked what has been going on for quite some time.
All conjecture, of course. The only sure thing is these guys are lying their asses off.
