Democracy Now! spoke with longtime activist Curtis Muhammad, a member of the People’s Organizing Committee and a native of New Orleans. On the second anniversary of Katrina, Muhammad wrote a farewell letter to the left and progressive forces in the United States. He has decided to leave the country and head south. Surely we need more good men and women like Muhammad, and it’s sad when such people already in such low supply leave the country, but I do understand his frustration and sympathize with the trials he’s gone through in the past two years. None of us can say we’ve been put through the same tests. I doubt brother Muhammad will really be able to leave us alone for good, but we hope he finds the peace he’s been searching for.

Very interesting interview. I’m not on board with all of Muhammad’s points, and I disagree with his characterization of the “enemy,” but his insight on many issues was prescient. His look back (in the last 1:30 of the first clip) on how the Civil War led to Reconstruction and the Depression led to the New Deal was particularly insightful. The essence of what he is saying bears repeating: “We have forgotten what it’s like to suffer as a [society],” and as a result, real progress in America has come to a standstill.

@ evmonk: I agree. It makes me worry sometimes that something catastrophic (like another wide-scale depression) will need to take place before Americans wake up from this selfish-adolescent coma that we seem to have fallen into. Until then, it seems people will continue to give priority to their iPods and Starbucks lattes over civic responsibility.
