Today in 1996, Tupac Shakur died as the result of a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas six days earlier. Tupac was the son of Afeni Shakur, a member of the Black Panther Party, and was named after Túpac Amaru II, an Incan revolutionary who led a Peruvian uprising against the Spanish. The Incan Tupac was sentenced to death for his rebellion, but became a symbol of resistance and human rights. Shakur’s own “Thug Life” philosophy reflected a similar struggle of an oppressed, yet proud people. To this day, the death of our American revolutionary still remains a mystery.
