Naomi Wolf, author of The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, joined Stephen Colbert last night to explain why our slide into fascism isn’t such a good thing.

Outside the safety of the blogosphere, political prophets are easily written off as far-left loons when they make the case that the destruction of our civil liberties is turning Bush’s America into Hitler’s Germany or Pinochet’s Chile. Even then, it’s a misconception to think that Bush himself is the problem, and that getting rid of him will correct the system. Our country’s democratic safeguards are too powerful to simply be eliminated abruptly, so they have being slowly eroded by our two corporate-controlled parties throughout several presidencies. We blissfully accept our situation, trusting that the American system will either correct itself or maintain an acceptable equilibrium of corruption between what we perceive to be combating left and right party ideologies.

Even before 9/11, our political system was on a consistent slide to the right, which is symptomatic of the more corporate, and hence, more totalitarian regimes mentioned above. It is only during our “war on terror” that this shift has been more dramatic and noticeable. History has shown that the more a nation gravitates towards the left, the more its citizenry enjoys liberty without condition. Unfortunately, the ruling 1 percent of the world are right-wing fascists, who are often successful in convincing us that the opposite is true.

  1. While I do agree that we are headed in this direction, why do writer’s such as Naomi have this benevolent fascination with democracy. She said something to the effect that we have had wonderful democracy for 200+ years, and hopefully it will come back. Ouch, 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner is not what I want, and it is the main reason we are not a democracy, rather a republic. She still is right on about the fascist state that has erupted since 9/11. You want it to get worse? Elect anybody other than Ron Paul and it will continue.

You seem to be under the misconception that because we’re a federal constitutional republic that we are not also a democracy. This is false. Our government is functionally democratic in that it works on the principle of majority rule, like it or not. Wolf was not incorrect in stating as much. As for Ron Paul, I would be interested in learning why he, as opposed to a liberal like Kucinich, is the only candidate able to curb the tide of corporate rule. Shrinking the government would seemingly have the opposite effect.
