Blackwater is a private company filling a niche in the illegal occupation of Iraq. General Petraeus has stated that the occupation would not be able to be sustained without such private contractors. This mercenary army often murders civilians, including the bodyguard of Iraq’s vice president, without consequence. The Iraqi government is unable to prosecute these mercenaries and the US has yet to enforce a law already on the books which could hold them accountable. Like any true capitalist, Colbert’s broken moral compass directs him to the conclusion that the only way to spank Blackwater is with the invisible hand of the free market.

Every now and then, the US government does a fairly poor job in hiding the fact that Iraq is not a sovereign nation. Despite Blackwater being banned by the Iraqi government, they are still being allowed to operate within Iraq by the US. Paper beats rock. Every time the Iraqis “step up” so we can “step down” there’s the reality of our own government and military occupation undermining their potentially democratic process yet again. Coupled with the fact that we’re supporting the very militias intent on bringing the Iraqi government down, it doesn’t take a crystal ball for experts to confirm that we’re going to be in the country for many years to come. Hey, at least we’ll already have Blackwater there to stabilize the chaos they’re creating. In fact, when we do finally end our military occupation the private sector will still continue theirs, which will be exceedingly more tyrannical in nature.

h/t to COA News for the clip above. Check them out. They’re good people. For additional information, Donovonc posted part 1, part 2, and part 3 of a Democracy Now! debate on Blackwater between Jeremy Scahill and Doug Brooks.
