The 148th Democratic Presidential Debate took place last night on MSNBC. With as many dates as we’ve had with the candidates, Kucinich and Gravel still tend to be the only ones willing to go past second base and give it to us straight. Edwards too is starting to sound more like a man-with-a-plan than he has in previous forums, but his actual policies and record leave much to be desired. Clinton and Biden continued their love affair with each other while Kucinich and Gravel continued to be ignored. As always, Dodd’s “talk clock” is quite telling of who the corporate media favors most. I’ve posted a brief description of the highlights to look out for above each video.
Part 1 of 16: The usual pro-war rhetoric from Obama, Clinton, and Biden.
Part 2 of 16: The top tier candidates can’t even promise that our troops would be out of Iraq by 2013 despite the fact that it could be done logistically in 3 months.
Part 3 of 16: Gravel owns Hillary over her pro-war vote against Iran today. Mrs. Clinton simply laughs in his face about it.
Part 4 of 16: Clinton dances around her views on an Israeli attack against Iran, for fear that support or opposition for such an illegal action could cost her either American votes or AIPAC money.
Part 5 of 16: The rest of the non-liberal candidates follow suit by reiterating their support for the terrorist state of Israel and opposition to Iran’s right to nuclear power.
Part 6 of 16: Gravel says he’s “ashamed as an American” by what his country is doing to immigrants. Now there’s some honesty you won’t hear from another candidate.
Part 7 of 16: It’s pointed out that not only does Hillary have horrible judgment in domestic policy, foreign policy, ways to convey human emotion, and sofa fabric pantsuits, but that she could never win the election.
Part 8 of 16: Healthcare is discussed, but the man with the single-payer not-for-profit plan is not allowed to speak. At the end, Gravel admits he stuck the credit card companies with $90,000 of unpaid bills because they deserve it. Fuck yes they do. Rock on old man.
Part 9 of 16: Kucinich tells the real story about Muni Light to counter Russert’s half-truth corporate hit job.
Part 10 of 16: People opposed to gay marriage voice their disdain for discrimination against gays.
Part 11 of 16: Exciting social security discussion.
Part 12 of 16: Kucinich delivers a good one-liner on his rationale for a national ban on public smoking.
Part 13 of 16: The Puritans fear that the evils of alcohol might corrupt the kids they’ve sent to kill Iraqis. Again, Kucinich and Gravel are the only two rational individuals who support lowering the drinking age (and possibly the voting age).
Part 14 of 16: Hillary informs us that America was a utopia during Bill Clinton’s presidency. Kucinich delivers another great zinger halfway through.
Part 15 of 16: Tim Russert leaks the identity of the official who raised the pro-torture hypothetical. It’s Hillary Clinton’s husband.
Part 16 of 16: A light-hearted sports question closes out the debate, then it ends. Thank God it finally ends.

Thank you for posting the debate, I appreciate the effort. But I don’t really need the slanted summaries though — let me make up my own mind, eh? And so far I think Edwards is the most viable and progressive option.

You’re welcome Seagoat, but this is a blog. Posts reflect the views of the blogger. If you don’t want commentary then you’re free to watch the videos on YouTube. If you disagree with my analysis then you’re encouraged to start a healthy discussion with me or other readers. That’s how blogs work.

Thank you for uploading and posting all of these vids. I watched the vids and was disgusted with the majority of the candidates. I’ve been a support of Kucinich since day 1. Why? Because he actually proposes an entire new paradigm when it comes to tackling the great problems of the day. It’s amazing to me how Kucinich was muffled throughout the entire debate, barely given time to speak on the great issues of the day, is the ONLY candidate proposing a single-payer healthcare plan!
We are experiencing the nadir of American democracy. And this is because change is coming so slow, so incrementally, that the problems we face won’t be solved in our lifetime and they may never be solved because we, the American people, are not willing to elect leaders that truly challenge the status-quo and we won’t put an end to a privately financed campaign system which results in having candidates who are not best choice for president but merely ones who raised the most money.
Great change comes from great leadership; people who are actually willing to put their lives on the line and aren’t bought and paid for by a special interest. I am thoroughly disgusted with the American electorate. I don’t believe American voters are nearly educated nor properly informed about the great issues of the day and they don’t understand where exactly they fit into these great issues. The republican party has done so much damage to this country, manufacturing damaging platitudes that warp the national dialogue and lionize capitalism as humanity’s salvation. It is the role of capitalism to generate wealth. It is the role of government to distribute it. Republicans have so bastardized the notion of government as an “evil entity” it’s no wonder we live in a climate of fear and distrust of government. People in the United States are afraid of their government, unlike in Western Europe, where it’s just the opposite.
It’s sad to think that Hillary Clinton will be selected as the democratic nominee for president. She’s the biggest wolf in sheep’s clothing this country has seen in a long time.

Bill Richardson struck me as the most grounded candidate who would probably make the best president. Mike Gravel scored the best by pointing out Senator Lieberman’s “fig leaf” for Bush going to war with Iran. Kucinich is a fool for believing his opinion matters among Democrats and in a trivial forum such as this. Edward’s had many good answers– particularly about how he had learned from his mistake for allowing Bush to take us to war in Iraq and by explaining how he wants his children to be raised. I can’t figure out why either Dodd or Biden is bothering to run. Obama had no fire in his belly– he should ultimately make an uncontroversial running mate.
By occasionally trying to justify herself, Clinton seemed to occasionally forget that she has already been annointed to be nominated.
Our country is in trouble.
