Chris Matthews was taken to task last night for trying to promote his self-help book, which defines success by a cutthroat standard of how much you’re willing to exploit people and how well you’re able to lie about it. By over-emphasizing the capitalistic tendencies of advancement and self-interest as a respectable code of conduct, Stewart contends that Matthews simply tosses aside our innate moral principles which conflict with such a bankrupt philosophy. He even plainly states that Mathews’ book is a Machiavellian roadmap on how to ruthlessly attain power and take strategic control of your opponents above any other consideration. What a wonderful lesson on how to be a complete asshole.

Even better than the criticism itself is the fact that Stewart essentially prevented Matthews from achieving his own shallow concept of success by refusing to properly promote his book on the subject. 3. That was hilarious. I almost felt bad for Chris Matthews, but only almost.
That being said, I do think that the so-called “Machiavellian” principles of strategizing one’s image as well as one’s relationships to other people do have little gems of merit. If you look at people with money and successful careers, you have to realize that they got there not by being goody-two shoes. That’s not to say they did everything in an “evil,” exploitative matter, but it does mean they had to make the hard, tough decisions that many people would rather not be responsible for.

Now personally, I feel that true skill and competence are paramount to all. But I also acknowledge that in order to get oneself into a position where one can utilize these aspects, one indeed needs to be able to “sell” themselves to a certain extent.

As a freelance artist, I know my skill level, and I am confident in my ability within my craft. But in order for me to get the job or the gig, it is imperative that I be able to “sell” myself, namely my abilities, to the potential client. Salesmanship is sometimes a necessary evil.

In this case, I believe it is Self-Interest that separates “selling” from “lying.” If you tell a client that you can deliver something that you really can’t, good luck getting paid, and good luck getting any future work! It is within your own self-interest that you can back up what you say you can deliver with actual ability, actual competence, and actual results.

Perhaps Matthew’s book focuses too much on the self-promotion aspect over the Actual Competence-thing. I don’t know, I haven’t read it. But there is something to be said for some of these concepts. In the end, it is Self-Promotion, Networking, and sometimes Reputation that can get your foot in the door, but only actual Competence gives you staying power as well as doors that open all on their own.

Anyone who tries to work for themselves, including freelance artists, should be able to appreciate this. And if anyone is upset over what I’ve said, I’m no success story. Well, not yet!

  5. Only fools pay any attention to this washed-up, loudmouth, exhibitionist political hack. And now he wants those fools to buy some kind of self-help tripe based on the morals of a political hack. What a loser and complete waste of space…and hot air.
