An erroneous report from a freelance interpreter of one of Syria’s representatives was quickly jumped on as proof that Israel had indeed bombed a Syrian nuclear facility on September 6th. After more than 7 hours of investigation on Wednesday, UN officials came to the conclusion that the Syrian delegate was simply misquoted. “There was no use of the word nuclear,” U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq said.

The misinterpretation made headlines around the world, and gave credence to the professional speculators in the corporate media who had raised concerns over Syria’s nuclear ambitions. Syria has maintained that nuclear facilities do not exist in its country. Israel has remained silent on the matter.
