If you’ve ever wondered why your typical Ron Paul supporter only has a two word vocabulary, the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s computer forensics research department has your answer. Ron Paul’s online cult following has been shown to be at least partially manufactured. The research department analyzes hundreds of thousands of email messages per month. After getting bombarded by Ron Paul emails, the lab began examining their origin.
Researchers found that the emails were actually coming from different countries than their IPs indicated. For example, messages said to be from the US were actually coming from Korea. These messages were clearly not coming from Ron Paul’s official campaign, but rather illegitimate spam operations and botnets. Department Director Gary Warner said, “We’ve seen many previous e-mails reported as spam from other campaigns or parties, but when we’ve investigated them, they all were sent from the legitimate parties.”
Aside from the counterproductive efforts Paul’s online supporters may have already caused with their abrasive herd mentality, the spamming techniques of the Paulbots may prove to be just as harmful. Warner believes that deceptive sending practices such as these violate the CAN-SPAM Act and may actually get the Paul campaign into legal trouble.

What an uncritical mind you must have.

PaulBot 498H0980-0972 reporting for duty.
I’m still anxiously waiting for some of this Ron Paul Spam that everyones’ so excited about to appear in my INBOX. I’m always interested to see and hear what people are saying about my favorite candidate. But, sadly, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to examine the headers, smtp server IP addresses, and spoofed ‘reply to’ addresses of all this Ron Paul spem that by now must surely be bringing the internet to its knees.
Maybe the spam cops, when they’re through with Ron Paul, can look into the “Criminal” amount of Chinese ‘enlargement’ spam that I need to delete each day, while I scan for this now coveted Ron Paul spam email.
Read up, people. Make up your own minds. Freedom? or Tyranny? The choice is yours. But not for much longer.

You say “typical Ron Paul supporter has only a two word vocabulary” call us “cult”, “herd”, etc and then want us to leave you alone? I apologize if you are getting spam from loonies who support this man, but if it weren’t for the internet, nobody would have been able to even hear about Ron Paul. I know I wouldn’t, and now I have someone to vote for.
Victory through peace,
Ron Paul

Uh, well, your article is rather imbecilic. You have misinterpreted what the original article stated and have embellished it with your own imaginative facts…
Most of the Ron Paul supporters that I see posting are the ones who likely know more about their candidate and can articulate the issues better than anyone. If you want to see the two word vocabularies, it’s usually from the jealous detractors - or from Hillary and Obama supporters who have no idea what their candidate stands for.
Secondly, your statement that this recent spam email which only just happened yesterday is from the Ron Paul campaign is wrong, and libelous. Anyone could have done it.
What is the explanation for the support that has been since day one (Feb 24) with 200 at the first house party in NH? The Paul campaign has over 1,080 supporter groups…so they have plenty of people who have signed up for their email. They don’t need to spam people and never would.
It’s likely one person doing this, and it’s not something the campaign can control.
And it’s more likely another candidates’ supporter trying to discredit the campaign.
The support online is real and commenters are individuals who have posted using filters. Who are all those people in the videos and meetup groups and where then did Dr Paul get all that money, almost $12M dollars?
I picked up a friend at the airport tonight and stepped out of the car to stretch and the guard (a man of about age 60) approached me and told me he was a supporter too.
So this unfortunate incident of nefarious email has nothing to do with the campaign.
You must have a lot of money to spare for lawsuits.

@Al
Why would I want you to leave me alone? This post was created especially for you and the other Paul supporters to prove my assertions correct. Call me psychic, but the following onslaught of comments and wild assumptions about my politics will prove the “herd” description quite accurate.
11/1/07 at 11:19 pm
Yes “cult” and “herd” are the only two-words that the detractors seem to use when they can’t explain the massive support this person has on the internet.
There is never a discussion of the issues…just that ‘there are too many of us’ and they don’t like it.

@NH_GOP
Really? Comprehension goes a long way. It’s generally a good rule to read the article before you comment on it. Here, I’ll even help you by re-posting just the one sentence that counters your entire rant.
“These messages were clearly not coming from Ron Paul’s official campaign”
As I’ve said, you guys aren’t exactly helping your cause.
11/1/07 at 11:25 pm
So you like all of the attention that Ron Paul supporters bring you? I figured as much. But I guess you don’t have anyone to talk about for president. It’s boggles your mind to see people actually paying attention to a candidate doesn’t it. Your vocabulary does not include supporters. It’s only spammers cause that’s what your used to with the other candidates. The difference is passion and a real candidate. We will continue to speak about Ron Paul. We will continue to email our friends and family about Ron Paul. We will continue and you and all of the other hacks who don’t actually show support for a candidate will know that when we win your paycheck will be cut off for 8 years.
11/2/07 at 12:06 am
Wow, Ron Paul supporters are crazier than I thought. You know, this post actually didn’t say anything about who was behind the SPAM, and as Manila pointed out he clearly wasn’t trying to blame Ron Paul.
@NH_GOP, you want to discuss the issues? Ok. Ron Paul is a libertarian who believes in every man for themselves. No healthcare, no social security, no government benefits of any sort to speak of. But he also likes to push his beliefs on other people. Anti-abortion, anti-immigration, anti-stem cell research. He’s also atrocious on the environment, supporting useless drilling in Alaska and against the Kyoto Protocol.
Personally, I think if anyone actually listens to all that Paul says and genuinely agrees with them, that person is a total scumbag who should probably be committed.
If you believe in a barbaric, animalistic world with no sense of social unity, then you should go live on an island alone somewhere and get the f*ck out my country. Or better yet, why don’t all you fat ugly Texans secede and start your own wacka-wacka fruity land of illiterate, gun-toting, fetus-loving, bible-thumping, sister-humping hillbillies?
11/2/07 at 12:52 am
Sorry dude, you know I love you, but it’s pretty clear your problem with Ron Paul is the simple fact that he’s Libertarian. Never mind that he’s a Constitutionalist and the only Republican Candidate that has a lick of sense.
Why does this matter to a group so obviously in favor of Kucinich? Well, thanks to a certain dipshit has-been actress, Kucinich is going to have a real rough time. Meanwhile, The Puss-ocrats are far from impressive on Anything lately, which means that the ReDUHblicans just might win AGAIN!!
As scary as that is, I’d rather have a Republican named Ron Paul, who at least is reasonable and intelligent, not to mention a constitutionalist, than Any of the Puss-ocrats other than Kucinich, whose candidacy, as I’ve mentioned, was given a nice fat black eye by some dumb broad.
Of course, there is always my favorite presidential fantasy:
Paul/Kucinich 2008!!!
11/2/07 at 12:54 am
@PapaFigue
Actually to be fair I agree Ron Paul is the best Republican choice. At least he’s honest. I agree with his stance on some things, the war in Iraq for example, but I have to say in principle I disagree with the concept of libertarianism.
I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but some of the previous comments here really annoyed me.
11/2/07 at 1:03 am
@PapaFigue
“…it’s pretty clear your problem with Ron Paul is the simple fact that he’s Libertarian”
Exactly. Why else would I have a problem with a politician if not for their politics? I disagree with nearly everything the man stands for politically, but have never attacked his character. As Andy already pointed out, Paul’s environmental record is atrocious. Environmental degradation is a bigger problem than all the wars combined. If liberal Paul supporters actually care about the problems we face as a whole, they should rethink their endorsements. Besides, being the best Republican candidate is like being the tallest midget. Impeachment is another big issue I’d expect a “constitutionalist” like Paul to be behind. After all, he supported the impeachment of Clinton for lying about a BJ. That double standard alone is reason to question his true principles.
11/2/07 at 1:06 am
I think that accusation of Ron Paul and/or his supporters aren’t the issue here. It may want to be considered that this could just as easily be a subversive attack coming from an opponents supporters. Who can really say it came from a Ron Paul supporter. Do you not think that there may be someone out there who would like nothing better then to try to get RP or his supporters into trouble any way they can. Since they are the ones who are supposed to be the smart ones, the ones with more then “a two word vocabulary”, it may be that the finger is pointing in the wrong direction. Maybe time will tell but I cannot see either way how RP can be held legally liable for something which he neither did nor advocated. That just plain doesn’t make sense.. or maybe it’s just my limited vocabulary? lol
11/2/07 at 6:16 am
Manila,
I would be carefull with the content you post. Many sources which began to spread such information are now retracting the postion they held just a few days ago.
I would suggest you commit more research to the issues and or hire a professional to provide an expert view. If not you only pandor the position of one primary source who is now more soft with the position they held.
I would also be careful due to the fact a company called Freedom Agenda LLC or Inc I’m not sure which has taken a few cases to the next level of legal assistance for those who lie about Ron.
11/2/07 at 6:36 pm
^
LOL
Is that supposed to be some sort of threat? The guy quoted another source’s story and gave his opinion on it. If some Ron Paul supporting organization is willing to bring legal suit over a blog post, then I’m going to begin wondering what it is these predominately libertarian Ron Paul supporters actually mean by liberty.
11/2/07 at 8:11 pm
@Manila:
I would not be surprised at all if Ron Paul were to support the Impeachment of Dubya and his Cronies. He calls out pubicly and repeatedly the unconstitutionality of this administration. Of course, there is, to my knowledge, no documentation of this specific sentiment on his part, but last time I checked, the Pussocrat Majority in both houses don’t believe, SOMEHOW, in impeachment either.
The point I’m making is that Party Affiliation should not automatically discredit anyone. Granted, most of the time the stereotypes are true, but there are such things as Reasonable People, and Ron Paul is certainly one of them.
Look, I don’t agree with everything he believes in either. But when it comes to things like the “War on Terror” and Energy Independence and Diplomacy, he’s pretty right on. I know his opinion on the Environment, but even he acknowledged that, by striving for renewable, self-sustaining energy sources will not only break our dependence on foreign oil, but will also reduce pollution as a natural side effect. So despite his misgivings on Kyoto, Global Warming, etc., his solution, independence from oil and clean, renewable energy, is the correct one.
It may not be 100% Sierra Club, but it’s reasonable enough for me.
11/2/07 at 11:32 pm
@Sam
Yeah, that’s the second comment I’ve gotten from this supposed “grassroots movement” which has threatened legal action against me for posting my opinion. The first was NH_GOP. As you’ve said, nothing I’ve posted was fabricated, but summarized from a legitimate source. These are all scare tactics that prove quite well what I’ve already said about the majority of Paul supporters. As much as they claim to be constitutionalists, you’d think they’d respect the first amendment enough not to threaten people they don’t agree with.
@PapaFigue
To the best of my knowledge, he still doesn’t support impeachment. He was asked on C-SPAN in March why he doesn’t support impeachment and he dodged the question, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to suggest the president lied. C’mon now. It’s clear he doesn’t support it for political reasons.
I also don’t believe I’m being hard on Paul at all, and certainly not because he’s a Republican. I’ve criticized Democrats like Hillary, Obama, and Edwards far more on this site than I ever have Paul. You know this. It’s widely known in the blogosphere that one of the only taboos is to criticize Paul about anything. Everyone is fair game except for Paul. Say anything critical and you’re shouted down and threatened. It’s really absurd, especially since this post was critical of his supporters and not him at all.
11/3/07 at 1:39 am
So if you can’t refute the message, simply attack its supporters?
Did you know that a reporter questioned Rep. Paul as to whom he supported for the presidency, outside of his own campaign? Rep. Paul mentioned Kucinich.
I have yet to see the evidence that shows Paul supporters in the light you have mentioned. You and I had a very lengthy conversation prior to this. In the end, you declined to discuss the matters any further, but I thought it was an intelligent and thoughtful discussion. I must say I’m disappointed at your rant against Paul supporters. I enjoy your blog, but this is sour grapes.
11/3/07 at 11:57 am
@WillySF
What rant are you talking about? Are you completely insane? He posted a short story paraphrasing another source talking about the possibility that someone may have been spamming Ron Paul emails. He didn’t blame Ron Paul OR Ron Paul’s supporters.
The harmless post was answered by several lunatic Ron Paul supporters, like yourself, who completely misinterpreted the post (perhaps they didn’t bother to read it?) and even threatened legal action against MR.
So WTF are you whinging about? Use your brain! If you are actually a libertarian, then you should support free speech and free debate, and the right for others to express dissenting views.
I genuinely wish freaks like you would go start your own country somewhere. America would be much better off without the likes of you and your fellow Texans.

When you don’t know what you are doing, do it neatly.
