Lieutenant General James Dubik, who is in charge of training Iraqi security forces, acknowledged Iran’s role in lessening the bloodshed in Iraq. The irony is that hawks in the US government present this reduction in violence as a sign that America is single-handedly “winning the war” in Iraq, as they simultaneously denounce Iran on all matters. Dubik said that Tehran was keeping its pledge to stop the smuggling of weapons into Iraq.

US commanders claim violence in Iraq has dropped by 55 percent since June. “We are all thankful for the commitment Iran has made to reduce the flow in weapons, explosives and training (of extremists) in Iraq,” Dubik told reporters. “As a result of that, it has made some contribution to the reduction of violence.”

Major General Kevin Bergner shared Dubik’s optimism regarding Iran’s promise to stop the inflow of weapons to Iraq. “It is important here that the commitments that have been made start to see progress that is strategically measurable and sustains over time,” he said. Tehran announced it was ready for talks with Washington over Iraq’s security and stability.
