Father Gerry Creedon is a Catholic priest and advocate for immigration reform in Northern Virginia. These clips are from the 9500 Liberty video, “Illegals, God and Gospel.” In the first one, Father Creedon discusses the relationship between the law and The Church, which is often a touchy subject in America with regards to the separation of church and state. In the second, he replies to Greg Letiecq’s amateur interpretation of the Bible. Letiecq is leading an anti-immigration grassroots movement.

This is great. I was not familiar with him at all, but glad that I am.
It is not easy being a Catholic in today’s environment. Forces push against me from both inside and outside of my church. I would fit in nicely in Fr. Creedon’s community.
The church has actually been quite vociferous about the issues of immigration, but sadly due to the toxic mix of its own stupidity and the world in which we live, it has been drowned out a lot. There are so many Repub Catholics who rail against this kind of talk. While I live part of the time in the NYC metro area and part of the time in Albany, NY, I am in a church in Albany.
The diocese of Albany is rather liberal, all things considered. Our Bishop, Howard Hubbard has spoken out about immigrants rights and took a beating in our local diocesan newspaper. It is so sad to me, really tragic.
Sheesh Manila, now you will get me blogging about this… You are my muse for the things which I would rather not write about. And for that I thank you.
Anyway, I am very glad to be introduced to this and I guess I will add this to the list of things I will write more about.
Peace brother-

Thanks Fran. My church is rather pro-immigration. Then again, I live in LA, where the majority of every Catholic church is comprised of immigrants (including the clergy). It’s really sad to see American fundamentalism taint all religion in this country. Catholics are traditionally liberal, but the bombardment of what it means to be Christian in America easily corrupts Catholics who don’t have a strong sense of what Catholicism is about. They get pulled into the religious right. I’ve even heard fellow Catholics repeat the fundamentalist line that Catholic isn’t Christian.

Yes Manila, true true true.
This may be the only issue that Roger Mahony has any authority about. He is passionate about it and despite all the other bad, bad b.s., having heard him speak and preach about it very often and even in person, I think he is authentic there. This will be the first December that I do not come to LA in many years and going to the Cathedral for OL Guadalupe is a big thing for me. Oh well, next year maybe.
Anyway, speaking of liberal Catholic thought, I hope you go read my comment on Dead Issue’s Jesus/Huckabee death penalty post. Feel free to say something about my foul mouthed rant.
The Largest Minority either brings out the best or the worst in me. Maybe both!
Whatever it is, this is one of the best blogs ever. Glad to be a part of the conversation.
