mike huckabeeIn 1997, Huckabee claimed that Jesus would have agreed with him on supporting the death penalty. Shortly before a triple execution in Arkansas in Jan. 1997, a caller called into Huckabee’s show on Arkansas Educational Television Network and asking how he squared his Christian teachings with his support for the death penalty. As the Arkansas Times reported on Jan. 22, 1997:

Interestingly enough,” Huckabee allowed, “if there was ever an occasion for someone to have argued against the death penalty, I think Jesus could have done so on the cross and said, ‘This is an unjust punishment and I deserve clemency’.”

(Think Progress) Jesus, though, did not ask for clemency. Therefore, according to Huckabee’s logic, Jesus must have been in favor of capital punishment.  (F Jackie!)

  1. Jesus F-ing Christ! What the heezy????

“Interestingly enough,” Huckabee allowed, “if there was ever an occasion for someone to have argued against the death penalty, I think Jesus could have done so on the cross and said, ‘This is an unjust punishment and I deserve clemency’.”

OK. Let me take this in, I have the vapors. Get me my smelling salts please. What the freak is he saying here????

This is not the place for me to explore Christian theology, but in its most basic form- and I say that as a practicing Catholic (albeit a fowl mouthed leftist blogging one) the Cross was the whole f*cking point.

I can hear Jesus now “Dad- tell them its not cool!” and they take him down. Now there’s a story for you.

I give up. These people are assholes.

God will have to forgive me or not for that. God gave me a brain and my brain says assholes.

  2. Seriously. What a sub-par rationalization for revenge killings, which is basically what capital punishment is. This just goes to show that although fundamentalists know the Bible forwards and backwards, it doesn’t mean they understand one damn word of it.

Jesus didn’t ask for clemency because he was supposed to die for our sins, not for anything he’d done. As Fran says, the death of Jesus was the whole point. The crucifixion does not justify more sacrifices of human life, but actually condemns the practice since Jesus was supposed to be the last sacrifice.

And this guy is a minister? Oh right, he’s a Southern Baptist minister. The ranting homeless dude on the corner has about as much knowledge of theology as him. As with all GOP candidates, Huckabee is half crazy and half full of shit.

  3. Woe to you O Scribes and Huckabees!

    (sorry I could not resist!)

  4. Capital punnishment is a sacrament to the mob. Look at your local evening news. Watch that every night for a couple years and taste the fear.

  5. Oh Dead Issue- I hear you. Those bastards can press that crap right up to my lips, I won’t take it.

  6. Manila, capital punishment is not the only thing that rationalizes “revenge killings.” There’s always this thing called “war” that purges “revenge killings.” I wonder if you oppose that one too.

  7. What ever happen to Jesus words..”Judge ye not one another.”t
