President Bush will arrive in the Middle East on Wednesday as part of his renewed effort for a peace agreement before he leaves office in a year’s time.
Following talks with Ehud Olmert he’ll travel to the West Bank to meet Mahmoud Abbas.
As the primaries approach and our entire nation focuses on the election of the next president, our current one is still working to gain support against Iran. The so-called “peace talks” are a facade to grant Israel more than it’s entitled to under international law as Bush buys up Arab support against Iran. The world is still a very dangerous place America, and gets worse everyday with our continued involvement in the Middle East. Sadly, not much will change if one of the three corporate posers leading on the Democratic side get into office.

You know it hurts my heart to see Jerusalem, a city that when politics and power are stripped away, that I love. Of course, politics and power are never stripped away, other than inside of my heart and the hearts of the like minded.
I once stayed at the YMCA Hotel across from the King David. I walked around the grounds however and the lobby, recalling that in 1946 what amounted to Palmach terrorists set off an explosion. War being what it is, that is seen as an act of “heroic bravery” in Israel. A terrorist bombing is a terrorist bombing. Period.
Seeing the street scenes from East Jerusalem and the shopkeeper that was interviewed, it looked like the Nablus Road, a street I walked upon every day for a week. The shop keepers always had a smile and a salaam for me, I never felt threatened. I recall my cell phone ringing (it worked abroad) and one of my close friends from LA who is very pro-Israel and familiar with J’lem said “The Nablus Road! Aren’t you terrified? Are people trying to kill you?” How sad.
President Bush will go there and accomplish little and the world as always, hangs in the balance. That and the crazy-ass OT costs for having 10,000 J’lem cops on duty. Insane.

@Fran
What boggles my mind is that we still endorse varying levels of segregation to deal with the fact that three major religions all revere one small region. It’s 2008 and people of different faiths can’t live as neighbors in the holiest of places on earth without killing each other? Of course they can. Israel does not need to be a “Jewish state,” a “Christian state,” or a “Muslim state”. How beautiful would it be to have the place which gave birth to all three of these religions actually represent the good in them through love and acceptance?

I stopped believing a long time ago that peace in the Middle East was attainable. Even if the people of the region themselves wanted it (and I’m sure many do), those in positions of money and authority wouldn’t allow such a thing. There is money to be made and outrage to exploit, though let me add that these are both dangerous games to play. Eventually the tinder-box nature of this part of the world will result in major consequences for everyone.

@Kevin
Make no mistake. The people in “positions of money and authority” in the Middle East are us. We are the reason dictators exist and democracies are overthrown. The people of the Middle East do want peace, but peace simply isn’t profitable to the puppeteer.

Manila, one of the most moving moments of my life, was when I stood near the pools of Bethesda, at the Basilica of St. Anne, speaking to a Mormon, steps away from the Golden Dome and the al-Aqsa mosque and with the Via Dolorosa at my back and the Western Wall not far away. I am being 100% serious when I tell you that the muzzein called the faithful to prayer, church bells rang and I tried to be as present as I could. To see and hear and to be in this unique place, so close and yet so far from God and God’s peace. It blew my mind.
Not finding any peace in a city as small as Jerusalem or in a country as small as Israel, with “God’s foot prints” everywhere is sheer insanity.

Just like the cops Musharaff sent to protect Bhutto?
Suppose Cheney might have made a deal with them,
they get rid of Dubya, Cheney get’s the White House,
and the US attacks Palestine for Israel in return?

Thomas please stop it you are scaring me!
I am thinking of how so many cabdrivers in Jerusalem are Palestinian or Arab-Israelis and that their work for the day is probably nil between the traffic and the security.
