Ever-fearful of the anti-establishmentarianism preached by Hamas, the Egypt government and the EU have decided to support Mahmoud Abbas’ plan for the Palestinian Authority to take control of the Rafah crossing rather than Hamas. How Fatah would do this in occupied Gaza is still a mystery, though Hamas security forces did seem to accept the situation as they worked alongside Egyptian border guards today to control traffic and set up fences.

A Hamas delegation will be meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday. A Hamas spokesman said the new border agreement between Fatah and Egypt will be discussed since “Hamas is a legitimate government and should not be excluded from any arrangements regarding the crossing.” Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian president in the West Bank and Fatah leader, is due to hold a separate meeting with Mubarak due to his stubborn refusal to talk with Hamas until they give him control of Gaza.
