After 17 years on the air, Montel Williams was canceled for speaking out against Fox’s choice of news coverage. When asked his opinion of Heath Ledger’s death, Williams turned the tables and asked why Fox, or any corporate media station for that matter, is not giving as much time to the 28 soldiers who died in January. Montel has 22 years of military service under his belt. If any television host is entitled to comment on casualties of war, it’s him.

The sphincters of the hosts were clearly tightening, and Montel consequently did not return after the commercial break for a second segment. Then, just 4 days after he insulted Fox News by insisting that they support the troops and give them more coverage, a number of stations owned by Fox decided against renewing his show for another year. It was a rather heavy-handed punishment even Sylvia Brown didn’t see coming, but was done to send a clear message. Send one of your own to Fox here.

h/t to Robert Ruszkowski, Director of Social Media/Virtual Outreach for the Kucinich Campaign, for the video.

  1. Fuk Fox

  2. I’m not quite sure what I find more appalling about Faux news. The concept, the smarmy liberal bashing, the double-standards, or the fact it makes no apologies for stabbing people in the back.

  3. Cancel Fox News. Especially O’Reilly. CANCEL FOX NEWS!!! GO with MSNBC / COUNTDOWN with Keith Olbermann!!!

  4. BeulahMan. Yes. FOX FUX.

  5. Sorry … last post. The name says it all. I find FOX news to be so very unfair and definitely unbalanced — like in Bill O’Reilly. How unbalanced can a human get? Narcissist.

  6. We can cry out all we want here in the sphere… Fox news, porn and other things that we may love or loathe tend to exist because there is an appetite for them. Trust me - if they left someone else would fill the void. The key is to weed by the roots - how that works is slow, messy and tedious. So it goes.

I met Montel a couple of times - he is a cool dude. This sucks for him and is a clear message of how censorship works. What first ammendment?

  7. Good for Montel. Sorry he suffered the typical wrath from corporate news. Who really gives a rip about celebrities when our young people are being wounded and killed for an immoral war? Why should Montel have to suffer after speaking his mind and what should be the mind of this nation?

  8. I love fox news and feel that they truly cover and support the military p.s my husband fells the same and is a retried CB do you know what that is?

  9. Montel is a celebrity - who cares if he got canned. Fox sux. The war sux. The guys going over there to earn a paycheck, well they suck, too. I got no sympathy for soldiers who fight in illegal wars. They violate their oath to obey the Constitution. They deserve what they get.

  10. I don’t think this interview could have gotten him fired. There are tons of rumors out there and, in my personal opinion, I think his show went off the air simply because, well, he had done over 17 years of it. He probably wanted to retire. But then again, I honestly don’t know. That’s based on opinion.

  11. Look, I’m not disagreeing with anything Williams said. In fact, I agree wholeheartedly, and I tip my hat for him having the balls to come out and speak his mind. That being said, I also know what happens when you piss off the boss. It sucks, but that’s just what happens. If you care about your job, you don’t piss off the boss. You also don’t bang the secretary, but I think I’ve made my point…

  12. Montel spoke his mind and I hope that if that is what caused his demise then let’s watch as he is picked up somewhere else and the viewers follow. Franiam is right we must weed by the roots. When Fox is left just a colorful weed garden and the real flowers are gone they will perhaps hire better gardners. Good luck Montel and thanks for having guts and brains in a sea of wimps and dopes!

  13. Montel must have hit a nerve. There is a concerted effort to NOT show American casualties. Instead the culture is fed a constant diet of Britney and Miley. Montel thought he was voicing something that any American should feel free to express but he fell into the big taboo, which is talking about the costs of this war…
