The Supreme Court turned its back on our civil rights and right to privacy on Tuesday after it rejected a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union challenging President Bush’s domestic spying initiative. The court gave no reason or comment on the rejection.

The lack of action by the Supreme Court underscores the futility in challenging the authoritarian power of our government. “It’s very disturbing that the president’s actions will go unremarked upon by the court,” said Jameel Jaffer, director of the ACLU’s national security project. “In our view, it shouldn’t be left to executive branch officials alone to determine the limits.”

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the suit, saying the plaintiffs couldn’t prove they’d been spied upon because the government has refused to turn over information about who has been under surveillance.
