Actor Leonardo DiCaprio will be testing his filmmaking ability by using the anime classic “Akira” as his guinea pig. The original “Akira” takes place in 2019, and deals with the member of a biker gang who is subjected to government experiments which unleash his latent powers. “Akira” started out as a manga in 1988 and was directed into an animated film by Katsuhiro Otomo.

DiCaprio has made the ingenious decision to alter the original story by making it a “two-part epic” and setting it in “New Manhattan” instead of “New Tokyo”. Millions of fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the day when this new American version will completely taint their appreciation of a once classic work of art. I’m sure George Lucas and whoever the hell did the American Godzilla movie both have something to do with this.

  1. Yeah, of course he’s gonna ruin it. Brilliant comment, considering it hasn’t even been MADE yet.

  2. Reina, I have yet to see one respectable anime translated into live-action, but I find your optimism refreshing, no matter how naive it is. Changes to the storyline spell immediate disaster. You think they’re going to keep that ending either? Forget about it.

  3. I’m with you, Manila Ryce! I love anime, and I am so tired of SUPER STARS and their egos!

Isn’t there an original thinker/writer/performer left in America?

I’ve given up going to movies unless they are foreign. Our public library system has terrific imports you can take out for free. They have largly replaced most tv watching I used to do. That and books, books, books.

Have your read *Are We Rome: The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America*?
