    What in tarnation does they have to do with democracy anyway???

The super-delegates are a political party creation in response to (or in anticipation of) situations in a wonderful candidate snags a compelling plurality of delegates (who are locked into their support) and then turns out to have a nasty skeleton in the closet, or becomes ill or some other unforeseen event. It would give party leaders a chance to pullout a winner, most likely many people’s first choice, and even more people’s second choice.
    Basically, a modest insurance policy.
