The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) received material from multiples Western sources which suggest that Iran continued work on a nuclear weapons program after 2003. The material included designs for a nuclear warhead, how it would perform, and how it would fit onto a missile.
Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, angrily dismissed the documents as “forgeries”. This material happens to make a timely appearance after a US National Intelligence Estimate, released last December, reported that Tehran halted its program in 2003. The December report was heavily criticized by Israel, President Bush, and Western politicians who make a living talking tough about Iran.
In November of last year, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz insisted that the head of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, be removed from office for having the nerve to state that there is no evidence Iran intends to build nuclear weapons.
During President Bush’s visit to Israel in January, in the wake of the Intelligence Report from December, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barah tried to sell Bush on the idea that Israel had “rock solid” information which would justify an Israeli military strike against Iran. President Bush publicly disowned the US report and even privately apologized to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for invalidating Israel’s rationale for war with Iran.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said this new material presented a “very strong case” for imposing a third round of sanctions on Iran. The UN Security Council is set to meet in Washington to discuss the possibility of more actions against Iran. “If they want to continue with that path of sanctions, we will not be harmed. They can issue resolutions for 100 years,” said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As a signatory to the NPT, Iran has the right to pursue nuclear power, and insists that its program is aimed purely at this goal. The imperialistic Western world, however, has punished Iran with the understanding that they are guilty until proven innocent.
