Confidential documents confirm allegations from Hamas and other Palestinians that the US has been providing political rival Fatah with weapons and money to forcibly topple the democratically-elected Hamas government. Of course, if you’ve been following this blog, you’ve known all of this from day one. After learning of Fatah’s plan to overthrow the government, Hamas expelled the party from Gaza in a move which was spun by the Western media as a Hamas coup. In reality, Hamas’ actions were necessary to prevent an actual US-backed coup from occurring.

The plan for the Chief of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to remove the Hamas authorities in Gaza was signed off by Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. One document gives instructions to Abbas in 2006 to dissolve the Hamas government if it refuses to submit and recognize the Zionist regime. “We believe that the time has come for you to move quickly and decisively,” the text reads. “If Hamas does not agree within the prescribed time, you should make clear your intention to declare a state of emergency and form an emergency government explicitly committed to that platform. If you act along these lines, we will support you both materially and politically… We will be there to support you.”

The second memo, drawn up by the State Department, instructs Abbas to remove Hamas from power by the end of 2007 by collapsing the government. It also asserts that means be found to produce an “endgame,” and that Fatah’s forces be strengthened. The third memo instructs Abbas to rely on a US deal to strengthen Fatah’s own power while disbanding his Fatah-Hamas Unity Government to rob the democratically-elected Hamas Party of its political power.
