What is not commonly discussed is that the Vietnam War came to an end, not because of civilians protesting, but because of active soldiers protesting. Though civilian protests were undeniably essential in creating the atmosphere of dissent, the government had little to fear from them and everything to fear from a military mutiny. When opposition to leadership takes hold from within, it spreads quickly. Groups like Iraq Veterans Against the War are important for this reason. With their help, returning veterans are not only finding the courage to speak out, but hopefully more soldiers in operational capacity will begin to cross that line from dissenting to resisting.

  1. these groups are critical is changing policy but also american attitude towards the war. there are still far too many people who actually believe we did the right thing, things are going well, and the surge is working…..

the bush administration has a powerful lie machine working in full gear

  2. I have said this countless times, it will be the military that saves this country from the neocon criminals. It appears too late for us to do it as a citizenry.

This is why it is so important that the government not be allowed to contniue the brainwashing it conducts on these folks (the radical Christianity teachings in the military, as an example). These vets need to know that the truth is that we support them… just not the criminals that are directing their actions right now.

I’m pretty sure that they are getting the full Hagee treatment as we write this.

  3. As a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, I have to point out that there is a huge difference between Vets today and Vietnam Vets. It was much easier for drafted Vietnam vets to protest than kids that volunteered today. Especially among Americans today, there are still huge misconceptions about the military and how we think. Its one thing when you get sent to Vietnam in a draft, completely different when you join knowing a war was going on. I’m not saying people shouldn’t protest…I’ve been doing it since I was out. That said, I cannot say I would ever think to do it while on active duty and I have a problem with people trying to get others to do so while they are on active duty as well. As the old military saying goes “We protect democracy, not protect it”. The idea of the military not following orders is frightening to me. Sounds pretty similar to the Roman Empire and the Armies picking Caesars left and right. Or at least thats my point of view.
