Legendary intellectual Cornel West joins Al Jazeera to bring a bit of substance to the usually hollow discussion of American politics. Dr. West touches on a variety of subjects from race, philosophy’s role in critiquing power, the truth behind Reverend Wright’s controversial words, free-market fundamentalism, authoritarianism, American hypocrisy, and hip-hop. Sit back, absorb, and share your thoughts.

I wish West was a bit more critical of Obama’s deplorable statements regarding Muslims, especially his line in the race speech which blamed radical Islam for the conflict in Palestine. Obama also supports the continuation of the war on terror narrative, wants to redeploy troops to Afghanistan instead of bringing them all home, wants to keep troops in Iraq to fight “terrorism,” has expressed a desire to potentially attack Pakistan, keeps the nuclear first strike option on the table with regard to Iran, and on and on. Obama buys into and espouses the racist paradigm of US foreign policy in the Middle East hook, line, and sinker. The fact that he has to distance himself from Islam or Muslims to be a viable candidate is really quite indicative of the profoundly racist culture we live in.
I suppose there are certain things a candidate must say to get elected, but I have a hard time buying into the logic of holding off criticisms until a candidate is elected.

Well thanks for that.
Cornel West was refreshing, I had not heard him before. Found myself agreeing with much of what he was saying, except for the fact that I believe religions are part of the reason for the problems we face today. You saved me from listening to the talking heads rehashing the debate.

Fascinating. I haven’t even finished watching the whole thing, but let’s just say I have my Friday night planned!
(Yes, I know, what a loser.)
One comment to Sam: I agree with you. It is unfair to blame only radical Islam when radical Judaism, radical Zionism, and, as Dr. West pointed out, radical Free Market-ism are just as responsible. There are always at least two sides to a conflict, and when the arguments boil down to “We’re right, you’re wrong, period,” someone usually needs a thorough enema.
