Sorry, I know you’re not supposed to speak ill of the dead, especially when they have spooky pumpkins for heads, but Tim Russert was a horrible journalist and his death doesn’t change that. I still hold him and other corporate media mouthpieces responsible for the deaths of over a million innocent Iraqis. Russert died at a relatively young age, unless you compare that age to those of the US soldiers who continue to die every day.
Russert did not speak truth to power, but committed character assassination against those who did. This is the kind of “serious question” this “great journalist” was known for asking. Obama would later come to be asked unfair gotcha questions in his run (once Kucinich was out), but he sure seemed to enjoy Russert’s hackery when it was Dennis who was on the receiving end of the non-substantive bullshit.
As a Washington insider, Russert was not known to grill politicians as all the corporate news sources are now claiming he did. The news media’s revisionism of Russert’s career and the attention to unimportant issues in the wake of his death may actually be a fitting tribute since that’s what Russert was known for himself. Unlike real journalists, Russert gained financially and politically by NOT asking questions. He made a living diverting attention AWAY from the issues, and never exposed any truths. I’m sorry the man is dead, but he still sucked at his job. That’s all.

I have been hesitant to say anything… until today. We were plastered by MSNBC (and NBC) with Russert stuff yesterday evening. They were explaining how Tim was “The Man” when it came to asking the hard questions, etc.
But, like you, Bro’, I have a hard time finding examples of the “hard questions”, unless you mean that he would carry the Big Money theme whenever they told him to. Medium Russ didn’t go after these guys like a true journalist or reporter would. He was simply a part of the system.
I hope the best for his family and I am sure their grief is as horrible as anyone who loses a father (been there, done that).
But I will not buy the bullshit when the evidence is overwhelmingly showing us different. Your video is a prime example, but one can find hundreds of these, if they were so inclined.
I’m not.
Good post, but you may catch some heat.
Truth can hurt.

I don’t miss him already.

i had met tim many times
good guy, good person, smart guy, hard worker
lousy at his job — really fell short as a journalist and protector of american ideals…..
condolences to his family — this is tough on them

He at least gave the facade of being kind, polite, and impartial and these days, that’s increasingly rare. These days people in that role are apt to come across as shrill and hackneyed.

“Every day” is two words, not one.
And is far as Tim Russert is concerned, he was better than anyone on Fox “News” or CNN.

Thanks for the correction Alan.
And being kicked in the crotch is worse than the ass, but neither is enjoyed.

I suppose I don’t disagree with any of the statements in this article, but I find it rather distasteful.
“… especially when they have spooky pumpkins for heads.” Come on.
I just gotta say: “Don’t hate the playa, hate the game.”

I do not mourn Timmeh’s passing, he was part of the problem and never part of the solution. I don’t doubt in real life he was a nice guy, but his toadying to anyone in power was both distasteful and unprofessional. He carried water for his corporate masters, and earned undeserved fame and money as a result. He was to journalism what George W Bush is to democracy.
58 is too young, and I do feel sorry for those he left behind.

Tengrain

I do not mourn Tim’s passing either. I lump him with the same folks as Stenophelopolis (sp??) and just about every news commentator from ABC, NBC and CBS. They reflect the worst or nadir of broadcast journalism. Ed Murrow must be turning over in his grave. Of course, they are more “commentators” than journalists.

Now that Tim is dead and in the Hands of the Creator of All things - we all sit here waiting for George Bush
to stay president in Nov because of martial law in America after a Nuke or Virus is set off ……
All Hail King Bush

I’m really not a fan of Russert’s, but 58 is still pretty young to literally drop dead. As far as his “hard-hitting” question to Dennis Kucinich, I stated before that I place the blame squarely on the dumb attention-whore bitch known as Shirley MacLean. And this, I stand by.
