Despite previously saying that impeachment was “off the table”, Speaker Pelosi has now stated that the House Judiciary Committee may hold hearings on an impeachment resolution against President Bush. This appears to be another case of too little, too late. Pelosi is simply pandering to her constituents to prevent Sheehan, a pro-impeachment activist, from taking her job. Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers sat on his hands when Kucinich’s articles against Cheney were sent to committee. Aside from appearances and empty statements, I expect little to change this time around.

Impeachment is not just an option to pursue when high crimes and misdemeanors are committed, but a responsibility. The constitution makes it clear that under such circumstances, impeachment is not optional. It’s a damn shame Dennis has been rendered ineffective at every turn by his own party. Anyone who’s payed attention over the past year knows it’s been the Democrats who’ve blocked impeachment, not the Republicans. It’s time to clean house of both parties.
