Monica Goodling, a graduate of the ever-prestigious Bible study group called Messiah College, is being crucified for simply answering to a higher power – the president. Rather than deny that she repeatedly broke the law, Goodling employs Bush’s own strategy of claiming to be completely ignorant and incompetent in order to dodge blame and responsibility. Stewart also has a little something to say to Blitzer and the bickering children holding this hearing.

That’s crazy. My sister actually went to Messiah College. Not surprisingly, she still supports Bush.

Hi Manila, I just wanted to leave a friendly challenge about the way Messiah College is being used here. I went to Messiah myself and, actually, I would love to be a professor there someday (I’m currently in a doctoral program at UCLA). Granted, it’s a small-ish college with about 3,000 students, but in its size category and region, Messiah College is ranked fourth in US News and World Report’s “Best Colleges” list.
The school is founded upon a tradition called Anabaptism, which is a radical stream of the Reformation–the first to advocate separation between church and state. They believe in living simply, advocate nonviolence, and have a strong affinity to social justice. Messiah is a progressive place. Fundamentalist schools would not have a woman president. In fact, it is rare even for secular schools to take such a step. Actually, very conservative Christian schools consider Messiah College too “liberal”.
Sure, there are conservative students there. But the school itself aims to open minds and push students towards critical thinking and service to others. You can’t blame a school if its mission doesn’t work on everybody. It worked on me though. If you’re concerned about support for Bush… hardly any of my fellow alums that I’m friends with support Bush. Many of them would never vote Republican (I personally despise partisanship on both sides). By the way, a few months ago, the school did host the “compassion forum” on issues of faith and social justice with Obama and Clinton (not McCain).

My apologies Pat if I offended you. It seems I confused Messiah College with Regent University, Pat Robertson’s tier four law school with over 150 alumni hired by the Bush administration, when writing the description to this video. Thank you for correcting me and giving us some insider info on Messiah.

Thanks, Manila. I appreciate your gracious reply. I wish I could get the same from Jon Stewart :) Normally, I love him. But I didn’t yesterday!

To bad Stewart made the generalization about Christian schools . I’m trying hard to keep my own Anti Religious Arrogance at bay myself . Pat did a great job of representing . Thinking Religious Please Stand Up ! It was a great clip though . It will be hard to top Colbert’s apology !
