Part 1 of 3

The Obama administration has surprised many of its supporters (while confirming the suspicions of many rational people) by embracing key parts of the Bush administration’s illegal policies, including indefinite detention, kidnapping, and invoking state secrets privileges. Salon blogger Glenn Greenwald joins Democracy Now! to address this abuse of power while Jane Mayer of the New Yorker plays the role of standard Obama apologist as she begs the audience to give the president the benefit of the doubt while hypocritically denouncing the very same policies when they occurred under Bush.

  1. Political capital was spent closing Guantanamo…Gates isn’t Obama’s man, and it’s best to figure out what else has to get tossed out prior to installing his own guy. If the threads are finally being pulled all over the federal bureaucracy, then there’s plenty of shame yet to be unveiled. This chapter has to be finished, but it has to also be finished the right way.

The Dark Side is a very strong credential that Mayer brings to the table.

  2. The strategy of changing all these things is important. Packaging a newly discovered scandal with a public call from the WH for Congress to change a law is one way, but a Pentagon Papers type of bombshell is another…prosecuting Yoo, Bybee, Bradbury and others.

Imagine if one of these predator strikes ends up killing Bin Laden…in this area I think the best is yet to come. I’m seeing things in the mainstream press that were buried 2-6 years ago. Binyam Mohammad…his story, w/ Padilla…that’s a horror movie we’ve never been shown.
