Earlier this month, a BNP (British National Party) election candidate was found to have the largest amount of chemical explosives ever found in Britain. The suspect, Robert Cottage, was arrested as police recovered 22 chemical components used to make explosives from his residence. The record haul is suspected for use in home-made bombs, though the exact nature of the chemicals has not been revealed. David Bolus Jackson, another white fascist with links to the BNP and connection to Cottage, was charged with similar offenses when a rocket launcher, chemicals, and nuclear biological suit were confiscated from his home. The prosecution alleges that Jackson and Cottage had “some kind of masterplan” in mind for the explosives. The two men are accused of possessing explosive material, and a trial date is set for February 12th, 2007.

The BNP is a far-right group similar to that of the American KKK. Their main platform is to “preserve” Britain from non-white Britons, and membership is reserved exclusively for “indigenous caucasians”. The BNP also advocates returning all non-white Britons to their countries of origin. Bloggers have criticized the British media and government for keeping silent about this story. Afterall, you’d think the largest terrorist cache would attract some attention, yet none of the national media have covered the threat. It is undeniable to most that the incident surely would have made headlines had the man been a non-white, or a Muslim, or even Irish Catholic. Superintendent Neil Smith confirmed the official stance of British authorities when he was quoted as saying that Cottage was “not a terrorist” and that his home was “not a bomb factory”. Hence, the two men are being tried under the Explosive Substances Act of 1883 rather than under contemporary terrorism legislation.

This buried British story resembles two similarly overlooked American stories, the first being that of Joseph Konopka. Mr. Konopka was a white American suburbanite, who was arrested in 2002 for stockpiling nearly a pound of sodium cyanide along with substantial amounts of potassium cyanide, mercuric sulfate, and potassium chlorate in a Chicago subway system. There were no work-related reasons for Konopka to posses the cyanide, which can kill humans if ingested or converted to gas. Konopka also confessed to damaging power and water facilities. However, FBI spokesman Ross Rice downplayed the suspect’s activities, saying, “This is not a terrorist plot. I don’t think it’s a big deal”.

In 2003, William Joseph Krar, an American white supremacist, was found with an even larger arsenal which he kept in a Texas storage facility. Krar’s armory included almost 100 firearms, 3 machine guns, 500,000 rounds of ammunition, 60 functional pipe bombs, a remote-controlled explosive briefcase, a landmine, grenades, 67 pounds of solid binary explosives (ammonium nitrate), 66 tubes of binary liquid explosives (nitromethane), military detonators, trip wire, blasting caps, and cases of military atropine syringes. Krar was selling explosives to various militias and white supremacist groups that shared his ideology. The federal agents that stumbled upon Krar’s storage unit also found a homemade hydrogen cyanide device, containing 800 grams of pure sodium cyanide and two glass vials of hydrochloric acid. The device could have killed more than 6,000 people under optimal conditions. To date, the bomb remains the only genuine WMD possessed by a terrorist found in the United States.

Krar’s story was not picked up by the mainstream American media, nor was it ever mentioned by Attorney General John Ashcroft or the director of the FBI. In a post-9/11 era, it does seem odd that a genuine WMD uncovered on American soil did not make the news. However, the mainstream media was always quick to report any possible Muslim terrorist activity. In fact, the same day Krar’s WMD was found, the New York Times jumped the gun to report that a team in Iraq had finally found chemical weapons. This cache later turned out to be two dozen barrels of pesticides. The story was still used by Republican Senator Rick Santorum to justify support for the war even after it was discredited by the Defense Department. Additionally, the White House has held numerous press conferences to announce the possibility of Muslim terrorist attacks, such as the plot against the Library Tower in LA, without offering any evidence to support their claims. It seems painfully obvious that the media, and even our government, is uninterested in addressing terror when that terror is the product of white males. Still, at home and abroad, Islamist ties to terrorism are better marketed in today’s political climate than the larger threats posed by white fascists. And though you will never hear this from your television, both Krar and Konopka, two US citizens, are accountable for possessing a great deal more chemical weapons than have ever been found in Iraq since the US-led invasion.
