Family Guy Takes Shots at Cheney and Bush

April 30th, 2007 by Manila Ryce

As is their custom, Family Guy attacked the Bush administration pretty successfully last night. They took a shot at Cheney for… well, taking shots. And took shots at Bush for… well, also taking shots, but with a different connotation.

The Griffin’s move to Texas where Chris and Meg must sneak onto Bush’s ranch and steal a pair of his underwear in order to be initiated into the Texas Youth Club. This is perhaps a reference to the bizarre initiation rituals of Skull and Bones, to which G. W. Bush was/is a member. Cheney is shown guarding the place with his infamous boomstick, which strikes terror into the faces of old men everywhere. Quail, not so much.

Real Time with Bill Maher – The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban

April 21st, 2007 by Manila Ryce

download file

Maher and his panel dispel the myth that the recent ban of partial-birth abortions is the first step in overturning Roe vs. Wade, which is nothing more than alarmism by the left and a false-victory for the right. John O’Sullivan points out that the Supreme Court actually did what it was supposed to do, and that ruling against the bill would be an abuse of power since it was passed by both chambers of Congress with a provision allowing the procedure to be performed if the mother’s life is in jeopardy. Amy Holmes, a pro-choice conservative analyst, also backs the ban.

It should also be noted that despite her unfortunate political leanings, Holmes is incredibly hot. So kudos to her for that.

Bleeding Pregnant Woman Ignored by Police During Traffic Stop

February 3rd, 2007 by Manila Ryce

Sofia Salva, a Sudanese native, was pulled over by officers Melody Spencer and Kevin Schnell who had seen her putting a fake temporary tag on her car’s rear windshield. When asked why she was driving with a fake tag on her car, Salva explained that she was on her way to the hospital.

Over the next 45 minutes, she repeatedly told police that she was pregnant, bleeding, and pleaded for medical attention. Salva was taken to jail and kept overnight on traffic violations and outstanding city warrants. The next say she was released and delivered her child prematurely, who died within minutes. She is now suing the Kansas City Police Department for $25,000 plus punitive damages.

A videotape of the incident shows that after her ninth request to go to the hospital, one of the officers responded by saying, “How is that my problem?” The dialogue throughout the video shows much the same tone. “Do you want to check me?” Salva asks. “I’m bleeding. I have a 3-month baby inside.” Schnell then walked away from the car telling his female partner, “She just gave me a line of excuses. She said she’s bleeding. She said you can check her.”

The officers then make Salva sit on the curb as they went through her car, purse, and groceries. Salva again exclaimed that she was bleeding and needed to go to the hospital. “Well,” Spencer says, “that will be something you can take care of when we get done with you.” After becoming upset, Salva again offered to prove that she was bleeding, only to be told to sit back down by officer Schnell. “If I die here, will you take care of me?” Salva asks. “If I die here?” Schnell then replied, “Fair enough.”

After learning that she had outstanding city warrants and traffic violations, the officers handcuffed Salva. “I’m bleeding. I swear to my God,” said Salva. To which Schnell replied, “I don’t doubt that you’re possibly bleeding, but you got a lot more problems with us.” Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Rich Lockhart said an internal investigation is underway, but that he doesn’t know how long it will take. The two officers remain on duty and have declined to comment.

Pope Benedict’s Christmas Message

December 25th, 2006 by Manila Ryce

Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Midnight Mass on Christmas day in St. Peter’s Basilica. He delivered an appeal for abused children around the world, referring specifically to the escalation of war in the Middle East. He directed prayers towards children forced to fight “as soldiers in a violent world, toward children who have to beg, toward children who suffer deprivation and hunger, toward children who are unloved.” He continued, “Let us pray this night that the brightness of God’s love may enfold all these children. Let us ask God to help us do our part so that the dignity of children may be respected.”

Referring to abortion, Benedict said, “The child of Bethlehem directs our gaze toward all children who suffer and are abused in the world, the born and the unborn.” The pope also made a plea for the overcoming of prejudice as the world faces ever-growing concern over jihadist attacks. Police stood guard at churches in Pakistan, Indonesia, and Palestine this Christmas.

The pope began the Midnight Mass, broadcast to 44 nations, with a call for peace in Latin: “Pax vobis” (”Peace be with you”). The faithful responded: “Et cum spiritu tuo.” (”And also with you.”)To symbolize the worldwide reach of the Roman Catholic Church, children in native costumes from around the world — including Korea, Poland and Burkina Faso — brought flowers to a figure of the Baby Jesus near the altar.

Benedict told worshippers to “not forget the true gift: to give each others something of ourselves, to give each other something of our time, to open our time to God.”

Christmas gift-giving also means giving to those who cannot give anything back, he said.

Mary Doe Wants Abortion Overturned

October 11th, 2006 by Manila Ryce

Sandra Cano, named “Mary Doe” in the Doe v. Bolton case, appealed to the Supreme Court Tuesday to reverse the 1973 ruling which gave her the right to an abortion. The 1973 decision was a companion argument to the more famous Roe v. Wade ruling. Roe v. Wade grounded first-trimester access to abortion, while Doe v. Bolton loosened medical requirements for abortions. Sandra Cano, or “Mary Doe”, states that she was in an abusive relationship at the time of the ruling, and claims that she never really wanted an abortion. However, she was pressured by her attorney to fight the abortion option in court.

Norma McCorvey, or “Jane Roe” in the Roe v. Wade case, made a similar appeal years ago. Like Cano’s appeal, McCorvey’s appeal to overturn the decision was rejected. Next month, the justices will hear an abortion appeal on the federal ban of “partial birth” abortions. Three federal appeals courts have already ruled the ban unconstitutional since it does not include a health exception for medical emergencies. The appeals of McCorvey and Cano have come as a huge surprise to lovers of dead baby jokes.

Banned Parenthood

September 19th, 2006 by Manila Ryce

A couple in Maine, upset that their 19 year-old daughter was pregnant, tied her up and planned to drive her to New York for a forced abortion. A rope, duct tape, scissors, and a .22-caliber rifle were found in their car. A loaded magazine clip was also found on Nicholas Kampf, the 19 year-olds father. Salem Police Officer, Sean Marino, wrote in a court affidavit, “Her parents chased her out into the yard, grabbed and tied her hands and feet together. Katelyn states that her father then carried her to their car and they headed toward New Hampshire.”

The Kampfs were apparently upset that their daughter was impregnated by a man who’s currently incarcerated. Upon finding out she was pregnant; Katelyn’s parents told her she had no choice but to get an abortion. Like a bad movie, Katelyn convinced her parent’s to untie her in Salem so she could use a Kmart bathroom. Inside the bathroom she used her cell phone to call the authorities and ran to a nearby Staples until police arrived. The Kampfs are currently jailed on charges of kidnapping. Because Katelyn didn’t know how many weeks pregnant she was, her parents decided that they’d get the abortion done in New York because of looser laws which allow abortions for up to the 24th week.

Jon Stewart Elaborates on Bush’s Moral Hypocrisy

July 22nd, 2006 by Manila Ryce

The veto of a bill which would’ve provided federal funding for stem cell research instead provided good material for The Daily Show. Jon Stewart juxtaposed different clips showing Bush’s contradictions on the sanctity of life.

Bush Confuses Morality with Hypocrisy

July 20th, 2006 by Manila Ryce

As the Iraqi civilian death toll rolled over 40,000 from the war he started, President Bush used his veto power for the first time to veto a bill which would’ve federally funded embryonic stem cell research. And as the president who believes in a “culture of life” congratulated himself, the PM of Lebanon desperately pleaded him to ask for a ceasefire from Israel. Ironically, Bush said he vetoed the bill because, “It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect.” To override the veto, the Senate needed to obtain a two-thirds majority vote, which it failed to do. Bush also said, “This bill would support the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding medical benefits for others.” However, Bush fully supports the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding financial benefits for himself.
